Things to consider before becoming a single parent

Decisions to make before becoming a single parent

Who says only two people can parent a kid?

Once a topic that was barely heard of, more and more people are opting to experience parenthood solo. Be it co-parenting, adoption, unplanned pregnancy or surrogacy, there are a lot of options for people who wish to become a single parent, and thankfully, a lot more awareness too. It's also a rewarding and fulfilling journey an individual can take.

2/7

A lot of people are opting for single parenting

That being said, it's not an easy decision to make. Single parents need to assume the role of two parents at the same time and take a lot of conscious calls. You'll also be met with a lot of 'what if' questions thrown at you.

Before you make a decision, it's important to analyze both the pros and cons of it, before committing to raising a child all by yourself.

3/7

Managing the finances

Parenting isn't all fun. Raising a child requires sufficient money and financial responsibility. While partners in a relationship can share costs, bringing up a child may require you to do it all alone. Opting for fertility treatments, surrogacy or IVF also comes with its own set of costs. All these need to be taken into account when you welcome in another person in your life.

4/7

Facing emotional challenges and having a support system

It takes a village to raise a child and single parenting can be a lonely experience. Raising a child will alter your life, no matter how prepared you are for it. It can feel like an emotional shock for some.

If these are the concerns you feel you can take care of, single parenting can be considered.

It's also important to have emotional support in place. New moms and dads need time for self-care too. Have a support system who will back you up, help you out and don't make you feel all alone in the course of single parenting.

5/7

Taking care of legalities

Different countries have different legalities in place regarding adoption, surrogacy rules and parental rights. All these options have to be considered before deciding to become a parent. The same way, you would also need to select legal guardians in place of unforeseen circumstances and events so that there's somebody who can take care of the child.

6/7

Managing work-life balance

Single parenting shouldn't be something that you stumble upon, but a responsible and thoughtful choice. You need to be committed to the role, and be there for your child when need be. Career-wise, you need to make checks too. If you have schedules which run through the day, you might not be fully available for your child's needs and find yourself more easily drained out.

7/7

Is going alone what you really want?

A lot of single parents go into believing that solo parenting will fulfil their own emotional needs- and their baby is all that they would need. That's not an accurate judgment. Single parenting can be an incredibly exhausting, tough, and lonely ride. There will be sacrifices you will need to make. While you'll always have the company of your child, relying on the little ones to fulfil your emotional want and needs is not what a parent-child relationship is for. So, there will be some conscious decisions you will need to make before beginning one of the most exciting rollercoaster journeys in your life.
