Things no one tells you about raising a daughter

“She is a powerhouse of energy, talent and kindness”

Until few before, and even to this day in some cases, a daughter’s presence in the family was never seen as a permanent one. The reason being, she will marry and go to her “own” house.

It’s been only a few years the idea around raising a daughter has changed. Daughters are raised in the way they should be raised. They are allowed everything that is supposed to be allowed to them.

Girls are everywhere these days. From UPSC’s topper list to bagging top spots in entrance exams.

Believe in your daughter, do not overpower her talent with some rules that were set during archaic time.

2/7

“She needs extra attention for her health and overall well being”

When you are raising a daughter, there are several things you need to pay attention to including her health.

The health of a woman is always neglected; even by the woman herself because that is how she was raised not to speak about it and endure it forever.

From giving her education on menstruation, sex and opposite gender pay heed to your daughter’s well being.

3/7

“She needs privacy several times”

A daughter is never taught about privacy, she learns it herself.

From finding a secluded place to change her clothes to finding a dark and cosy place to hide her sanitary pads, seeking for privacy comes automatically to a girl.

Help your girl with this. Do not let it be her own struggle only. Let the entire family come together to help the daughter get some privacy.

4/7

“She needs to be heard”

A daughter is not your property. You don’t own her. You nurture her.

She is entitled to have an opinion and as family members you need to listen to her. Whether it is about her education or her marriage, she has the right to take her own decisions and you must support her in that.
5/7

“She need not be “girly” always”

Society’s knowledge about girls is very tendentious. There are certain ways people want girls to look like or dress up.

Remember, your daughter can either be “girlier” than what you can imagine or can be nothing like that. Whatever is the case, that will not make her a different girl than others.

Weird things Indian parents hear when they have a girl child

6/7

“She can do her work alone without anybody accompanying her”

Raise your daughter to be a brave person. Make her realise that she needs to protect herself.

Do not disallow your daughter to carry on with her work. Let her do things on her own and learn from the experience.

7/7

“Teach your daughter that nothing is unachievable”

We limit the potential of our daughters by making them believe that there are certain things which only a male can achieve. This needs to stop.

From career to responsibility, there is nothing that is gender specific. If a man can do it, teach a woman that she can do it too.
