Parenting steps that end sibling rivalry like a pro

If you are a parent, you have probably witnessed your children fighting countless times where a toy is snatched, a door is slammed or the siblings fighting over “who gets to sit in front”. While some degree of sibling rivalry is natural and even healthy for building negotiation skills, constant conflict can take a toll on family harmony. According to a 2012 study published in Child Development, persistent sibling conflict is linked to higher levels of anxiety and depression in children. So how can parents step in without making things worse? Here is a 4-step method that helps restore peace while teaching children essential life skills like empathy, communication and conflict resolution.

2/6

Pause and stay neutral

The first instinct may be to jump in and scold one or both children but as per a 2012 research paper in Parenting: Science and Practice, parental favouritism, whether real or perceived, fuels rivalry. Instead of immediately taking sides, pause and calmly acknowledge both children’s feelings. For example, “I see you’re both upset. Let’s figure out what happened.” Staying neutral helps prevent resentment and keeps the focus on problem-solving.

3/6

Encourage each child to share their side

Conflict resolution starts with being heard. Encourage each child to explain their perspective without interruptions. A 2015 study in the Journal of Family Psychology found that giving kids space to voice their feelings promotes emotional validation and reduces escalation. This step also helps parents spot underlying issues, whether it is competition for attention or deeper feelings of unfairness.

4/6

Guide them towards solutions, not blame

Instead of deciding the outcome yourself, involve the children in brainstorming fair solutions. This teaches accountability and cooperation. A 2013 study in Developmental Psychology revealed that children who actively participated in resolving disputes with siblings showed stronger social skills and emotional intelligence over time. Try saying, “What’s a fair way to share this toy?” or “How can we make sure both of you get a turn?”

5/6

Reinforce positive interactions

Don’t let the learning stop once the fight is over. Praise your children when they manage disagreements respectfully or show kindness to each other. A 2010 study in the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology established that positive sibling interactions predict better adjustment and stronger bonds well into adolescence. Reinforcement helps shift focus from rivalry to teamwork.

6/6

Sibling rivalry doesn’t have to dominate your home

By pausing, listening, guiding and reinforcing, parents can transform everyday quarrels into opportunities for growth. It is not about eliminating conflict entirely but about teaching kids how to handle disagreements with empathy and fairness. In the long run, these lessons extend far beyond sibling relationships, shaping how children navigate friendships, work dynamics and even their future families.
