Sam Altman's baby sleeps in a crib worth 2000 dollars: What's special about investing in a good crib?

Is it worth investing in a good crib? Let’s have the real talk

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI and arguably one of the most talked-about names in tech right now, got his baby a crib worth $2,000. While this might sound like an extravagant splurge, it’s also sparked a conversation that’s surprisingly relevant for new parents everywhere: Is it worth investing in a good crib?
And the answer is—absolutely yes. Maybe not a two-thousand-dollar one (unless you're rolling in Altman-level tech money), but putting serious thought (and a bit of budget) into your baby’s crib is far from a luxury. It’s actually a smart parenting move.

2/6

Your baby will spend a lot of time in that crib

Let’s start with the basics—babies sleep a LOT. In the first year of life, infants can sleep anywhere from 14 to 17 hours a day, and most of that happens in their crib. That’s more time than you probably spend in your own bed. So when you think about it, the crib is not “just a piece of furniture.” It’s more like a second home for your baby—a place where they’ll spend countless hours growing, dreaming, and figuring out this whole “being a human” thing. If we adults care so much about getting the perfect mattress for a good night’s sleep, why wouldn’t we give the same thought to our baby’s sleeping setup?

3/6

A better crib comes with better safety

A well-made, high-quality crib is a critical investment in your child’s safety. Flimsy materials, loose screws, or poorly spaced slats can be more than annoying—they can actually be dangerous. Cheap or outdated cribs might pose risks like suffocation hazards, entanglement or choking on loose parts, slats that are too wide (baby could get stuck!), or paints or finishes that aren’t non-toxic. Investing in a crib that meets modern safety standards is a non-negotiable. It’s peace of mind while your little one sleeps.

4/6

Give your child the best place to sleep

Ever met a cranky baby? Then you definitely know how sleep affects their mood. And let’s be honest—how it affects your mood too.
A comfortable, supportive crib can promote better sleep quality, reduce frequent wake-ups, help babies feel secure and cozy and establish healthy sleep habits early on. Some high-end cribs, like the smart ones with built-in rocking or white noise features, even help soothe your baby back to sleep without you having to get up 20 times a night. Again, you don’t have to go full Silicon Valley tech crib, but even something like a firm mattress with good support and breathable sides can make a world of difference. Sleep, after all, is the real currency of new parenthood.

5/6

Check for longevity too

Here’s something most people don’t realize until it’s too late: buying a cheap crib may end up costing more in the long run. Why? Because you’ll probably need to replace it. A well-made crib can grow with your child—many convert into toddler beds, daybeds, and even full-sized beds. That means what starts off as a crib might stick around for the next 4–5 years, or longer. These convertible cribs often have adjustable mattress heights, removable sides for toddler mode, optional add-ons (rails, frames, etc.).

6/6

Spend smart

Let’s be real—most people aren’t dropping two grand on a crib, and you don’t have to either. There are plenty of high-quality, safe, beautiful cribs in the $300–700 range that check all the important boxes.
Here’s what to look for when shopping for a solid crib:
Certification (safety tested)Sturdy frame with no wobbleAdjustable mattress heightBreathable, non-toxic materialsNo drop-side rails
Also, don’t forget to invest in a good crib mattress—firm, snug-fitting, and breathable. It’s about comfort, safety, sleep, and peace of mind. Whether you are spending $300 or $2,000, investing in a crib that supports your baby's early development is a smart and worthy choice.
