"Are you doing enough for your children?"

Parenting is a journey that is full of uncertainties, and nobody ever gets the feeling that they know everything. Whether having a career along with bringing up children or working as a full-time parent, self-doubt is an inevitable problem. Asking oneself if one is doing enough or whether children view them as a role model are some of the questions that keep nagging parents.

Recently, Melinda French Gates opened up about parenting on social media platform Instagram. “Are you doing enough for this baby?," she writes in a long post captioning a few breathtakingly beautiful pictures of her children.

"I used to torture myself to be the perfect mother"

Not long after Jenn, my oldest, was born, I started hearing this voice that shrieked, “Are you doing enough for this baby?” Three years later, her brother, Rory, arrived, and then, three years after that came Phoebe. The voice just got louder.
For the unversed, Melinda Gates has three children Phoebe Adele Gates, Jennifer Gates, Rory John Gates with her ex-husband Bill Gates.
"Are you doing enough for your children? Are you doing ENOUGH?" I remember hearing it as a stay-at-home mom whose world revolved around the children. These thoughts got louder and more extreme after we began our foundation, and I suddenly had a whole bunch of new demands that kept me outside the family. I fixated on how I was failing at being a flawless mom. I fixated on what I could do better. But somehow, I didn't recognize that fixating on myself like that was actually costing time and energy from the very children I was trying to be present for."

The "good enough" parent approach

Melinda credited the idea of being a "good enough" parent helped her to change her own attitude. Parenting gurus define a "good enough" parent as one who loves their child and takes care of them without working towards impossible perfection. Rather than handing children everything on a platter, this philosophy aims to provide them with the skills they need to manage life on their own. She further explained: "Thank god I found the idea of a 'good enough' parent. Rather than attempting to be perfect, I began concentrating on being present. This shift enabled me to actually become a more excellent mother."

A lesson for all parents

Most parents weigh themselves down with the burden of perfection. But the question is, who really gets to decide what "good enough" is? Parenting isn't about showing up to every school function or meeting every expectation, it's about creating a supportive environment where kids learn resilience and self-reliance. By following this philosophy, parents can excuse themselves from pointless guilt while raising capable, self-confident individuals. Melinda's insight on parenting is a reminder to parents that a large part of being a 'good enough' parent might just be enough.
