Catalyst to her success

Global star Priyanka Chopra has often spoken about the role of her mother – Dr. Madhu Chopra, is shaping what she is today. She believed in Priyanka even before the ‘Citadel’ actor believed in herself. Here are some wonderful life lessons the mom taught her successful daughter to help her reach her potential.

‘Apne aap ko rupaiya samjho, chavanni nahi’

You get treated the way you treat yourself – a philosophy Madhu Chopra has repeatedly taught her daughter. "Priyanka ko main ek hi phrase bolti thi, tum apne aap ko chavanni manogi, chavanni jaise behave karogi, toh duniya tumhe chavanni jaise treat karegi, apne aap ko rupaiya samjho, bada samjho, rupaiya jaisa behave karo... be proud. Toh duniya tumhe... perception ki baat hai," Madhu told Josh Talks Asha. (I always said this phrase to Priyanka that if you consider yourself to be a quarter of a rupee then the world will consider you the same. Consider yourself higher in value like a rupee instead, behave like a rupee and the world will follow.)

No career pressure, only constant support

“We always told her, this is not ‘Do or die’. You can always go back, take up studies, or take up some other career. You have a lot of options. If not this, then that,” Madhu shared in the same interview.

Teaching financial independence

Priyanka had revealed in an interview, "Financial independence is paramount. My mom always says that when a woman is financially independent, she has the ability to live life on her own terms. I think that was the soundest advice that I ever got.”

She gave her kids three essential rights

In an interview with Hauterrfly, Madhu Chopra revealed the 3 basic rights her kids Priyanka and Siddharth always had even as kids – which help them become confident adults. “Both my kids had the right of thought, right of speech, and the right of expression." she said, adding, “Even when they were younger, when they came back from school, we used to ask them first about what happened, then we used to discuss it, or advise them.”

“What happened with this was they became confident, they were never scared of speaking, at least in front of their parents. Then it became a part of their nature. They became expressive,” she shared.

Egg freezing

Recently on Dax Shepard's Podcast, Priyanka revealed that she made the wise and happy decision of freezing her eggs in her 30s, on the advice of her mother who is a gynecologist. “I felt such freedom, I did it in my early thirties; and I could continue on an ambitious warpath. I wanted to achieve, and I wanted to get to a certain place in my career,” Priyanka said.

“Also, I had not met the person I wanted to have children with. So, with that anxiety-inducing, and with my mom who is an ob-gyn (obstetrician-gynecologist), I thought let’s just do it,” she added.
