How to be a good parent to your LGBTQ child

The support of parents is the backbone for a child's mental and physical health. LGBTQ youth, while coming out to their parents, feel a sense of discomfort and fear of whether they would understand them. They often feel disheartened when something similar happens and they end up finding themselves alone in the race of accepting their identity. If you are a parent and looking out for a way to support your LGBTQ child, here are some tips on how to be a good parent to them.

2/7

Be there for your child

Your LGBTQ child deserves attention, care, support, and respect as any other child. You have to be the biggest cheerleader of your child. You should empathize with them and be there for them whenever needed.

3/7

Get to know about the community

Before passing any unreasonable judgments on your child, you should always educate yourself about the LGBTQ community. There are plenty of credible resources on the internet that may help you in increasing your knowledge about it.

4/7

Praise your child for coming out

Don't be mean to them when they share their sexual identity with you. As a parent, you must understand what your child is going through. As a parent, always appreciate your child for being honest with you about their gender identity.

5/7

Find out LGBTQ parents meet up

You must find a place where all the LGBTQ parents meet up. This way you can thoroughly understand your child by gaining the understanding and experience from the meet-ups. Connecting with fellow LGBTQ parents would help you better understand the situation.

6/7

Love them for the way they are

Coming out to their parents is the scariest part for any child. They might feel unloved and judged while coming out to you. You as a parent need to make them feel loved about who they are. You have to be someone who appreciates their existence as an LGBTQ member instead of demotivating them.

7/7

Tackle bullying

Bullying is one of the major problems the LGBTQ people face. If you see signs of bullying, reach out to a counselor for help. Bullying leaves a traumatic mark on a child. To help your child come out of it, you need to tackle the situation with care. Reach out to schools for bringing queer-friendly groups in action, help your child in tackling the situation and visit a counselor for any serious help.
