Princess Diana is a great inspiration to mothers

Princess Diana was one of the most iconic figures of her time. Besides being a member of the British Royal family, she was a global humanitarian and a wonderful mother.

Prior to her marriage to Prince Charles and into the royal household, lady Diana was unaware of the traditions, customs and protocols that were so strictly followed by the royal members. But given that she listened to her heart and followed her instincts, she defied the conservative rules of royalty and built a legacy that lasts up until today.

Even when we look at royal parenting styles over the years, we cannot help but notice the changes brought in by the late Princess. It is she alone, who has inspired her sons to become the parents that they are today!

By giving birth in a hospital, Princess Diana broke royal tradition

Unlike the earlier royals, who gave birth to their children in their palace homes, Princess Diana broke royal tradition and gave birth to both her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, at St. Mary’s Hospital in London.

She also opted to be fully awake during the labour and decided to give birth to both her boys “in an upright position,” as per sources. Back in 1840's, royal women would undergo a procedure called "twilight sleep" during childbirth, where they would be medicated, but conscious enough to experience the birth of their child without any pain.

She chose to give her children a normal childhood

Royal kids have all the luxury in the world. Besides inheriting the wealth, the status and the popularity, they're also a source of intrigue for many.

However, Princess Diana was a fantastic mother, who believed in raising sons who were down-to-earth. She believed in giving them a normal childhood and also practiced what she preached.

From enrolling both Prince William and Prince Harry into a public school to taking them to a fast-food joint, Princess Diana did everything in her power to give her kids the life every normal kid would love.

She insisted on travelling with her kids, breaking one important royal protocol

When it comes to travel, as per royal protocol, two heirs to the throne were not allowed to travel in a single aeroplane. This was ensure that in case of any unfortunate event, at least the line of succession would be in order.

Given that Princess Diana was a loving mother, in 1983, on her travel to Australia and New Zealand with Prince Charles, she refused to leave her nine-month old baby in the care of the nannies and decided to take him along. While it may have seemed unappetizing to many of the royal fans at that time, it went on project Diana's love and attachment for her kid.

She opened up about postpartum depression

Although Diana was a wonderful mother, she had had her share of trials and tribulations.

In 1995, when Princess Diana in a bombshell interview with BBC’s Martin Bashir, opened up about her experience with postpartum depression, it struck a chord with millions of women around the world, who had or had been going through the same experiences.

In the interview, she discussed how she dealt with her poor mental health. She reveals that she received various treatments. “I received a great deal of treatment, but I knew in myself that actually what I needed was space and time to adapt to all the different roles that had come my way," she said. “I knew I could do it, but I needed people to be patient and give me the space to do it," she added.

With her statement, she broke through many stigmas and stereotypes that revolve around mental health disorders that take a toll on a women's health, especially after childbirth.
