Here's how being raised by a difficult parent impacts your own parenting style

Being raised by bad parents can affect the way you function

No matter how hard you try, toxic parents will never accept anything as adequate: How come you're not getting full marks despite excelling at art? They claim to know everything about you, but they never really seem to pay attention when you try to express your emotions.

They also constantly compare you with yourselves, your sister, and your friends—all of whom are radiant—while simultaneously seeming envious of your good fortune. They make fun of you in front of other people and then claim to be "just kidding." They argue among themselves and with you. They make an effort to persuade you that you are the one who is mentally ill, not them. They gently or not so subtly convey that you are the cause of their problems in life. If you relate to any of this, you need to be cautious of your own parenting style.

In accordance with popular belief, intergenerational trauma takes a toll on our kids and their kids too. Continue reading to find out how toxic parenting affects kids into adulthood and how it could manifest in your own parenting.

Be honest to yourself

People frequently want to cover up any flaws in their lives. It feels worse the more you hide. There may be some shame. Owning the issue gives you power and confidence, which reduces a lot of the stress that comes with it. It provides pain relief and is a constructive means of coping.

3/6

Forget what you couldn’t change

Even though it would be ideal if everyone got along with their parents, that's not always the case. Your ability to feel at peace with your relationship with your parents will depend on how quickly you can accept this.

4/6

Look at their good traits

What other positive traits does your parent have, despite the fact that they might not be able to provide you with the assistance you want? Did they help you repair that car or pick you up from school everyday?

5/6

Grieve for the hurt

The hurt of not getting what you wanted from your parents when you were a child might haunt you for the rest of your life. Weep for the experience you so desperately want. Face your rage at them for being unable to provide you with the assistance you required from them.

6/6

Build the family you never had

Remember not to seep in the same toxicity into your immediate family. Also, a family should not only consist of biological relatives. Your pals that you rely on for advice and support could become a member of the family you get to build.
