Are mobile phones safe for my child?

Mobile phones have become an integral part of modern life, with people of all ages, including children, relying on them for communication, education, and entertainment. As the use of mobile phones continues to grow, concerns about the potential health effects of exposure to electromagnetic radiation have emerged, particularly regarding its impact on children.

2/6

Understanding electromagnetic radiation from phones

Mobile phones emit a form of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation known as radiofrequency (RF) radiation. This radiation is in the microwave range and is relatively low-energy compared to ionizing radiation like X-rays and gamma rays.

3/6

Can phone radiation cause cancer?

The US CDC says, “we don’t know for sure if RF radiation from cell phones can cause health problems years later.” However, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified RF radiation as a “possible human carcinogen.” According to the US National Cancer Institute, "there is currently no consistent evidence that non-ionizing radiation increases cancer risk in humans.”

4/6

What does research say?

Several studies have been conducted to assess the potential health risks associated with mobile phone radiation exposure, particularly among children. While there is no definitive consensus, some studies have suggested potential links between mobile phone use and adverse effects on children's health, including cognitive development and behavioral issues.

It's important to note that the findings in this area are not consistent, and many studies have produced inconclusive or conflicting results. Some studies indicate a slight increase in the risk of brain tumors among long-term mobile phone users, while others find no significant correlation. The overall quality of the evidence remains a subject of debate among experts.

5/6

Follow these safety measures

Given the uncertainty surrounding the impact of mobile phone radiation on children, many health organizations and experts recommend taking precautionary measures. These include limiting a child's exposure to mobile phones, encouraging the use of speaker phones or wired headsets, and promoting frequent breaks during extended phone use. Additionally, parents can consider investing in mobile phone cases designed to reduce radiation exposure.

6/6

Physically distancing from phones

Apart from controlling mobile phone usage, it is also important to keep them away from your body to limit risks. If your child carries their phone, ask them to put it in their bag instead of their pocket. It is also important to keep the phone away from the body while sleeping.
