The brain of a child grows quickly especially in the first few years of school

What they eat has a direct effect on their memory, focus, mood, ability to learn and overall brain development. There isn't one magic food that will make you smarter overnight but a balanced diet full of certain nutrients can help your brain work better and grow in a healthy way.
(Dr. Rajiv Chhabra, Chief Paediatric, Artemis Hospitals)

Fatty fish

Salmon, sardines and mackerel are examples of fish that have omega-3 fatty acids. These fats help make brain cells, boost memory and make it easier for neurons to talk to each other. Kids who eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids tend to be better at thinking clearly and learning. If your child doesn't like fish, flaxseeds, chia seeds and omega-3 fortified milk are good options.

Eggs

Eggs are a great source of choline which is a nutrient that is important for brain and memory development. They also provide high quality protein which keeps kids full and energized throughout the day. Boiled eggs, omelets and egg sandwiches for breakfast can help you focus better during school.

4/8

Berries

Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are packed with antioxidants that protect the brain from inflammation and stress. They help your memory and slow down the decline of your brain. The natural sugars in berries also provide quick energy without causing unhealthy spikes in blood sugar. You can add them to yogurt, cereal and smoothies or eat them as a snack.

5/8

Leafy green vegetables

Folate, iron and antioxidants are all good for brain development and spinach, broccoli and kale are all high in these nutrients. Iron helps oxygen get to the brain better, which keeps kids awake and active. You can make these vegetables more kid friendly by adding them to parathas, soups, dosas and pasta.

6/8

Seeds and nuts

Almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds are all good sources of healthy fats, protein, zinc and vitamin E. Vitamin E protects brain cells and zinc helps memory formation. Walnuts look a lot like brains and they really help brains by making them better at learning and solving problems.

7/8

Whole grains

Whole grains like oats and whole-wheat roti give the brain a steady supply of energy all day long. They slowly release glucose into the blood which helps you stay focused and keeps you from getting tired in the middle of the day. A breakfast with whole grains can really help a child pay attention.

8/8

Dairy and milk

Milk, cheese and yogurt are good sources of protein, vitamin B12 and calcium. These nutrients help the brain grow and improve memory and nerve function. Yogurt with probiotics is good for your gut health which is closely linked to better mood and brain function.
Foods that are good for the brain help kids focus, remember things and stay energized. Eating well, getting enough sleep, exercising and limiting screen time are all good for brain growth.

Incorporating brain-boosting foods into your child’s daily meals is a simple yet powerful step towards lifelong mental wellness. These doctor-approved choices support memory, focus, and overall development, laying a strong foundation for learning and growth. With consistent, healthy eating habits, parents can nourish not just their child’s body, but also their brilliant, growing mind.
