Children are fidgety beings, and to get them to sit in one place can be quite a task. Even though it is important for children to streamline their energies into fun activities and games, it is equally important for them to learn the power of concentration. Concentration helps a child not just in studies, but also inculcates the habit of discipline, focus, and patience. If you struggle to get your child to concentrate, here are 7 tips that can help...

Break down tasks

Big tasks can overwhelm a child and he can get distracted even before starting something. Breaking a big task into smaller, manageable parts makes it easier for kids to focus and complete each step one at a time. For example, if your child has to study a long chapter, divide it into sections and let them finish one section before moving to the next. This approach also gives children a sense of achievement as they complete each small task, motivating them to continue.

Fix their timings

Children benefit from routine on a day to day basis. Having a fixed time each day for study or homework, trains their brain to expect and prepare for focused work. When a child studies at the same hour daily, concentration improves because the mind gets used to focusing during that time. This habit makes it easier for children to settle down and concentrate without fuss.

Cut off distractions

Distractions like television, mobile phones, loud noises, and toys can disturb a child’s focus. Creating a quiet, clutter-free space dedicated to studying or doing homework helps children concentrate better. Turning off the TV and keeping gadgets away during study time reduces interruptions and helps the child stay on task for longer periods. Make sure all family members follow this practice, and not just the child himself.

Long hours of continuous work can tire a child’s brain. Scheduling short breaks between study sessions helps children recharge and return to work with better focus. Avoid mindless activities like watching TV or scrolling through phone though.

Activities like jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, or sequencing games require children to pay close attention and think critically, which strengthens their concentration skills over time.

Children, just like the rest of us need fuel in the form of food to get them going. Similarly, lack of sleep makes it hard for children to focus and retain information. Similarly, a balanced diet rich in nutrients supports brain health and energy levels. Make sure your child gets enough sleep according to their age and eats healthy meals with fruits, vegetables, and proteins to keep their mind sharp.
