Men embracing parenthood at later age

Choreographer, director and actor Prabhudheva recently embraced fatherhood once again, at the age of 50. American actor Robert De Niro became a father at the age of 79. If all this is surprising, Al Pacino is officially a father at 83 with his girlfriend, Noor Alfallah. Here are some interesting benefits of embracing fatherhood at an older age.

2/6

Your child may be smarter

According to a study published in Translational Psychiatry, older fathers tend to sire “geekier” progeny. Researchers from the UK and US examined data of 15,000 sets of twins collected from tests to measure their “geek” traits. These include IQ, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) grades, interests and social skills) at the age of 12.

They found that kids born to older dads are more likely to have a high IQ, and a stronger ability to focus on their interests. These kids were also found to be less distracted by a desire to fit in socially, and are more likely to achieve “educational success,” which may lead to a stronger socioeconomic status.

3/6

Your child may have a longer life

According to a 2012 Harvard University study, there may be a link between advanced paternal age and chromosomes that can lead to longer life span of the offspring. As per the research, aging sperm might produce children with longer telomeres (tips of chromosomes) that protect DNA while being copied, which is linked to longevity for not just for one, but two generations of offspring.

4/6

More emotionally prepared father

According to Live Science, University of California, San Francisco researchers conducted a small study to find the optimal age for parenting. Most respondents of the study believed that being an “older” parent was more advantageous as they were more “emotionally prepared.” Parents of both genders in the study shared that the 30s is the ideal parenting era.

5/6

More financial stability

Having a child is expensive. From expenditure during the pregnancy, to that during childbirth and then raising a baby, even the initial medical and basic facility expenses can be quite high. Having a child later in life when you are financially stable and secure will be less stressful.

6/6

More life experience

If you jump into an early marriage and parenthood, you may learn a lot in life from your experience. However, if you choose to embrace parenthood later, you may be more mature and wiser, thanks to your life experiences. However, this in no way means that one cannot be a great and sensible parent in their earlier age.
