10 tips to keep your baby warm and cozy this winter

As the winter chill sets in, every parent’s instinct is the same keep the baby warm! But between layering confusion, room temperature worries, and endless advice from friends and family, it can get overwhelming. Don’t worry. Here’s a friendly, easy-to-follow guide packed with practical tips to help you keep your little one snug, safe, and comfortable throughout the cold season.

2/11

1. Layering up

Layering is the golden rule. Instead of piling on bulky clothes, dress your baby in thin, breathable layers that you can add or remove depending on the temperature. A good formula is: one more layer than what you are wearing.

3/11

2. Choose the right fabrics

Opt for soft cotton or fleece layers that are gentle on your baby’s skin. Wool can be warm but sometimes irritating—use it only as an outer layer, not directly on the skin.

4/11

3. Keep the head and feet covered

Babies lose a surprising amount of heat through their head and feet. A soft cap, socks, and mittens can make all the difference. Make sure they’re not too tight.

5/11

4. Maintain the ideal room temperature

Your baby’s room should feel comfortably cool, not cold or stuffy. Experts suggest keeping it around 20–22°C. Use a room thermometer if needed and avoid direct drafts.

6/11

5. Use winter-friendly sleepwear

Instead of loose blankets, go for sleep sacks or wearable blankets. They keep your baby warm through the night without the risk of covering their face.

7/11

6. Moisturize to prevent dry skin

Winter air can dry out a baby’s delicate skin. Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer after bath time to lock in moisture. Don’t over-bathe—3–4 times a week is enough in winter.

8/11

7. Keep feeding regularly

Whether breastfed or formula-fed, babies need regular feeds to maintain body warmth and energy. Feeding also offers skin-to-skin contact, which naturally warms them up.

9/11

8. Warm the bedding

Before placing your baby to sleep, warm the bed slightly with a hot-water bottle, but remove it completely before laying the baby down. Avoid electric blankets or heating pads—they can overheat a baby quickly.

10/11

9. Limit outdoor exposure

Stepping out in winter is fine, but keep trips short and avoid extremely cold or windy conditions. If you do go out, make sure your baby is well-layered, and use a stroller cover to block the wind—not to trap heat.

11/11

10. Watch for signs of overheating

Ironically, in trying to keep babies warm, many parents end up overheating them. Check the back of the neck, if it’s sweaty, it’s time to remove a layer. A warm baby is good; a hot baby is not.
