Steps to protect your baby from winter illnesses

Due to an immature immune system, newborns and babies can be very prone to cold or flu infections., especially during the cold winter months. Their immune responses are yet to develop and therefore may fail to fight off foreign pathogens i.e. viruses and bacteria.

That said, besides keeping your child warm, dressing them appropriately for the weather, keeping them hydrated and providing healthy nutrition, here are some effective steps you can take to protect them from cold and flu.

2/6

Do not touch your baby without washing your hands

It is extremely important to maintain healthy hand hygiene. Looking after your babies involves a lot of your hands. You need to lift them, pat them, play with them, all mostly with your hands. So it is crucial that you wash your hands with soap and keep it clean. Doing so steers clear of all the germs you may have picked up from a contaminated surface.

3/6

Ask visitors to do sanitize or wash their hands too

Having a newborn at home or even a few-months-old baby may invite a lot of guests. Your relatives, friends, colleagues all want to have a glimpse of your child and wish your family the best. However, having visitors also exposes you and your child to several contagious viruses. That said, if you have a visitor, insist that they wash their hands or sanitizer as they step into their home. Do not feel uncomfortable as it is the best way to keep illnesses at bay.

4/6

Steer clear of people who have symptoms

One of the most effective ways to avoid infections is by staying away from people who are sick. Cold and flu infections are extremely transmissible. Viruses usually spread from the tiny droplets released by people with flu or cold when they cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets then travel through the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Hence it is best to steer clear of people showing signs of such infection. These include a sore throat, cough, sneezing, runny nose and fever.

Breastfeeding is key

When it comes to newborns and babies, breastfeeding is a great way to boost their immune system. Given that breast milk is a rich source of antibodies for the infants, it is said to protect babies against some short- and long-term illnesses and diseases.

6/6

Stay home if everyone around is sick

During winters, there can be a sudden surge in the number of cold and flu infection cases, which is when parents must remain vigilant and avoid going outside. It is best to stay home with your infant when the infection rates are high and your child's immune system is still developing.
