5 common reasons why you may not be producing enough breast milk

Low breastmilk supply is becoming a common issue. From hormonal imbalance to certain medication, there are various reasons behind low break milk production. Not being able to feed your baby can cause stress, which can further increase the problem. Rather it is important to understand the reasons why you are not producing enough breast milk is the key to solving the issue. Here are a few reasons why you are not producing enough breast milk and what you can do about it.

2/6

Insufficient glandular tissue

This problem mostly occurs with first-time moms. In this condition, the milk ducts are not formed properly, which hampers the milk supply. The situation gets resolved during the second and third pregnancy. To stimulate your milk ducts, it is always advised to let your baby suck on your nipples, which can increase the milk production.

Remember, more sucking means more milk as breasts need proper suction to produce enough milk.

3/6

Hormonal problems

Milk is produced when hormones give a signal to your breast. So, if your hormones are going haywire, it can hamper your milk supply. Conditions like PCOS, diabetes and low thyroid can increase your chances of producing low breastmilk. If you are suffering from any of the above conditions, meet a lactation expert.

4/6

Breast surgery

Breast surgery can lead to the formation of fibroids that can impact the milk ducts. How much milk is produced depends on the intricacy of the surgery. Even nipple piercing can negatively impact breast milk production.

5/6

Oral contraceptive

Taking oral contraceptives while you are breastfeeding can also affect the production of breast milk. Though this doesn't happen with every woman. These pills impact the hormonal balance, which alters the supply of milk.

6/6

Medication during labour

Sometimes, women during labour are given medications that can impact their production of milk. These medications are given to induce labour. But the good thing is, these medicines only hamper the milk supply for a short period of time. And once the effect of the medicine is gone, the milk supply becomes normal.
