Tips for maintaining a kitchen garden

The kitchen garden isn’t only a healthy hobby and a stress reliever, and a unique way to save money. Kitchen gardening has gained a lot of momentum in the last few years. Now you can grow your favourite vegetable or herb while it helps you release a lot of stress and anxiety. However, we often start a kitchen garden but aren’t sure how to manage and maintain it further. We make mistakes and soon leave them. So here are few tips and ways to keep a healthy kitchen garden.

2/7

Grow it vertically

We often don’t have much space in the kitchen. Well, now you can grow your plants vertically from the new techniques and supporters available in the market. If you are a beginner, start simple with tomato, passion fruit, and related plants. You can also plant herbs for a dual benefit as they purify the air also. Also, due to this method, the plants are safe from pests that attack them from the soil.

3/7

More seasonal plants

Planting seasonal crops will help you maintain the kitchen garden better. It would require less effort and time to grow. Seasonal plants are also better for health and would save you a lot of money. However, make sure you pick one or two types of plants only as it isn’t 'the more, the merrier' case in the kitchen garden.

4/7

Time the harvest suitably

We often cut the fruit or vegetable before or after the right time. Take help from online sources or a gardener. You must time the plants correctly; otherwise, your whole time, money, and efforts go into the soil.

5/7

Grow the plants in shade

Remember your plants flourish when you utilize the space and resources correctly. It is not a rule to place your plants in the sunlight only. Plants like lettuce and berries are perfect examples of shady plants. If you don’t have a sunlight source in the kitchen, well, now you can quickly grow these plants.

6/7

Rainwater harvesting

Plants require a lot of water, especially in kitchen gardening. To be more sustainable and resourceful, rainwater harvesting is the best alternative. It not only saves a lot of freshwaters but also has the required pH levels that are suitable for your kitchen garden.

7/7

Companion plants

There are a lot of plants that grow beautifully with other plants. For example, lettuce with carrots or onions helps keep the unnecessary weed out of your kitchen garden. You can opt for one plant and two herbs options for a healthy kitchen garden.
