Step-by-step guide to grow dragon fruit in a balcony garden

Dragon fruit can grow rapidly as a tropical cactus that works exceptionally well in a pot. With proper sunlight exposure, support, and less maintenance, it will flourish in a balcony environment, even bearing fruits. These are easy-to-follow steps in growing dragon fruit in a space constraints environment.

2/8

Choose the right planting way

Dragon fruit can be propagated using seeds or by using cuttings, and using cuttings is preferred for growing plants in balconies. A healthy cutting measuring between 10-12 inches will take less time to germinate and will also produce fruits sooner. Healthy cuttings with no diseases should be taken from a mature fruit-bearing plant, and the cutting should be allowed to dry for a couple of days.

3/8

Select a large, sturdy container

A large pot with a depth of at least 18 to 24 inches and a width to match would be ideal. Dragon fruits have a large root system. The plant also grows to a considerable height. Hence, support is a necessity. Cement or clay pots are appropriate in this case.

4/8

Prepare a well-draining soil mix

Dragon fruit likes soil that is loose and well-drained. A combination of garden soil and sand and adding compost and cocopeat or perlite will do. Dragon fruit does not like soil that is densely packed. Incorporating compost will make the soil richer in nutrients and well-drained.

5/8

Provide strong vertical support

Dragon fruit plants are a type of climber; therefore, they will need support. You will need to provide a wooden, concrete, or PVC post in the middle of the pot. As it begins to climb, you can tie it to the supporting post to encourage vertical growth, which will lead to a higher probability of fruiting.

6/8

Ensure adequate sunlight

Position it in a location where it will get 6 to 8 hours of intense sunlight. It will do best on a south or west-facing balcony. Although it is a cactus, young dragon fruit trees should be shaded during hot afternoon sun.

7/8

Water carefully and consistently

Water the plant whenever the topsoil becomes dry. Overwatering can be considered the leading error, which may lead to root rot. In a dry season, plants may need to be watered once or twice a week, depending on the temperatures, but in colder months, frequent watering can be a problem.

8/8

Feed and prune for better growth

Use organic compost fertiliser or cactus fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season. Trim the unwanted and weak growth to manage the size and allow for air circulation. Trimming the plants also directs the plant’s energy towards flowering and fruit production, which is important for balcony gardens.

Dragon fruit can thrive in balcony gardens. In fact, it is a very convenient and enjoyable thing to grow. All it takes is an adequate container, lots of sunlight, a proper structure to grow on, and very little watering. Afterward, the result will provide stunning flowers and tasty fruits in the garden.
