Smell right: How to make homemade air fresheners for every room

Creating your own air fresheners is a sustainable and cost-effective way to keep your home smelling delightful. By using natural ingredients like essential oils, herbs, and fruits, you can craft scents that suit each room's ambiance. Here are some DIY air freshener ideas.

2/7

Citrus and mint spray for the kitchen

The kitchen often harbours lingering cooking odours. A refreshing citrus and mint spray can effectively neutralise these smells. Combine 3/4 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol, 10 drops of wild orange essential oil, and 8 drops of peppermint essential oil. This blend offers a crisp, invigorating aroma that uplifts the mood while eliminating unpleasant cooking odours.

3/7

Lavender and chamomile mist for the bedroom

For a calming atmosphere conducive to sleep, a lavender and chamomile mist is ideal. Mix 3/4 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract, 10 drops of lavender essential oil, and 5 drops of chamomile essential oil. Lavender is renowned for its relaxing properties, while chamomile adds a soothing touch. This combination promotes relaxation and helps create a serene bedtime environment.

4/7

Spicy cinnamon blend for the living room

Create a cosy ambience in your living room with a spicy cinnamon blend. Combine 3/4 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract, 6 drops of wild orange essential oil, 5 drops of cassia or cinnamon essential oil, and 5 drops of clove essential oil. This warm, spicy aroma creates a welcoming atmosphere and makes evenings in your living room more comforting and enjoyable.

5/7

Tea tree and lemon spray for bathrooms

Air fresheners that fight humidity and odour need to be used in bathrooms. Lemon and tea tree spray is very refreshing. Combine 3/4 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract, 4 drops of tea tree essential oil, 8 drops of lemon essential oil and 6 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. This combination cancels the odours, and the pleasant smell of fresh and clean air improves the atmosphere in the bathroom.

6/7

Gel air freshener for hallways

For continuous fragrance in hallways, one can use a gel air freshener. Combine 2 tablespoons of unflavoured gelatin and 1 cup of boiling water and dissolve. Add 2 teaspoons of salt and 15 drops of your preferred essential oil to prevent mold. Add the mixture to a jar and allow the mixture to dry. The gel is also capable of releasing the fragrance gradually, and thus gives the transitional spaces a long-lasting smell.

7/7

Baking soda and essential oil jar for small spaces

In small areas such as closets or drawers a baking soda and essential oil jar is easy but efficient. To create this, you will need one small jar of baking soda with 25 drops of any essential oil of your choice. Cover with a perforated lid so that the aroma can escape slowly. This solution can make areas that are enclosed to smell fresh without the use of sprays and air fresheners that are based on chemicals.
Natural ingredients give you the opportunity to make personal air fresheners in all the rooms. These home made solutions are cheap, eco-friendly and contain no toxic substances.
