Installing security cameras at home? Best places to put them to prevent theft

Planning to install security cameras in your home? That’s a smart move to protect your home from theft and unauthorized access. However, purchasing a high-quality security system camera alone won’t help you. Where you place those cameras really matters. When you position your camera correctly, it will capture evidence when it matters the most. Here are some places you should not miss.

2/6

Front door

There is a reason why most people install their first security camera at the front door. It is the best location, because it gives a view of the front of your home. It acts as a visual deterrent. Try positioning your camera high to the left or right of the door. This way, the camera can capture the door, the surrounding areas, and look for any trespassing. Some people install video doorbell cameras in the same location as the regular doorbell. While that’s effective, security cameras are best placed high. Place it high enough to be out of reach to stop it from being stolen or interfered with. But also ensure you can access it to charge the battery.

3/6

Back door or side entrances

The second camera should be placed so you have a clear view out of the back door or side entrance. Similar to the front door camera, place it high up, and angle it so it can capture the surroundings. But be careful not to angle it toward another person's property. If you angle it properly, the back door camera can give you a good view of the back area and the side gate. You can also use blocking or censoring tools if needed to obscure a neighbour’s property.

4/6

Ground floor windows

Another place you should not miss is the ground-floor windows. Interior security cameras are cheaper than the outdoor ones. They can also be powered using a plug socket, instead of a battery. These cameras can help you to keep an eye on your pets while you are away from home. You can install one in the ground-floor window. This will also give you the bonus of capturing trespassing on your property or any suspicious activity outside. In the worst-case scenario, it can also capture a break-in if the outdoor cameras somehow missed it.

5/6

Garage

You can also install security cameras on buildings on your property besides your home. For instance, the garage and sheds. You can mount the cameras on the wall, post, or fence to get a good view of the structure. Ensure you buy outdoor, weather-resistant cameras. They come with different features, such as the ones that light up when motion is detected. You can perhaps set a timer, such as from 10 pm to 7 am, for such cameras.

6/6

Driveway

Now, placing a security camera in your driveway is a must. It can act as a deterrent against car theft. Place your camera high and monitor its night vision and motion detection performance. If you place the camera too high, it may reduce motion detection reliability. So it is important to find the sweet spot. If you buy spotlight cameras, they can work in multiple ways. They can deter car thieves and also provide nighttime lighting if you don’t have a separate light. Ensure the outdoor cameras also have strong Wi-Fi signal strength to avoid any interference when it matters most. You can also relocate your router to facilitate better signal.
