How to grow ladyfinger plants at home (Simple step-by-step guide for beginners)

Vegetables are healthy for our body, and it would be great if we were able to grow our own at home, which will provide us with tasty and chemical-free products. There are different kinds of vegetables that can be planted, and ladyfinger, or okra, is one of them. This kind of vegetable is easily grown, and it does not require complicated care and maintenance. The process of growing ladyfinger plants is rather easy, and if you follow some instructions, then after a couple of weeks, you will see your results. Let us consider how to grow this vegetable at home.

2/6

Timing and quality of seeds

The climate affects the growth and development of the ladyfinger plant. Therefore, it should be noted that this kind of vegetable is grown in warm climates and requires warm temperatures. Thus, it would be best to plant seeds either in late spring or in early summer. One should always pay attention to the seeds' quality, as good quality guarantees proper germination. Moreover, it is recommended to choose seeds from a healthy plant or from a good seller.

3/6

Proper soil preparation

Ladyfingers need fertile soil which contains some organic substances. In addition, the soil should be rich and at the same time, loose to make it easier for the root system to develop and get all the required nutrients. A good idea is to combine three types of soil, i.e., garden soil, sand/coco peat, and compost. Garden soil should cover sand or coconut peat and compost. Such soil preparation will guarantee the healthy development of the ladyfinger plant.

4/6

Sowing and planting

One should sow seeds into prepared soil to a depth of around half an inch. It is important to keep certain distances between seeds; for example, a 12 – 18-inch distance would work great. Seeds should be sprinkled and kept moist until the sprouts appear. In case the temperature and humidity are suitable, after a couple of weeks, the sprouts will grow, and you will see green leaves.

5/6

Sunlight and water supply

Lady finger plants should get enough sunlight, i.e., 6-8 hours per day. For this reason, it should be planted in places where the sunlight is sufficient and does not disappear after some time. Moreover, water supply should be appropriate, so it is necessary to water plants regularly and do not forget about support. At first, support may not be required; however, as soon as the plant grows taller, support is needed.

6/6

Fertilization and harvesting

It is recommended to add organic fertilizer into the soil every now and then to increase the chance of blossoming and fruiting. It is believed that ladyfingers start growing vegetables in 6-8 weeks, so it will not take too long. Moreover, one can start harvesting the fruits as soon as they are tender.
