How to grow karela (bitter gourd) from seeds at home in your balcony

Growing bitter gourd, or karela at home is surprisingly simple, even if you only have a small balcony. It is a fast-growing, hardy vegetable that thrives in warm weather and sunlight. With the right container, nutrient-rich soil, and proper support for climbing, karela vines can flourish beautifully in urban homes. Starting from seeds ensures fresh, chemical-free produce straight from your balcony garden.

Choose high-quality seeds

Begin with good-quality bitter gourd seeds sourced from a trusted nursery or organic store. Fresh seeds have higher germination rates and produce healthier plants. You may soak the seeds overnight or gently nick the outer shell to speed up sprouting. Choosing the right seeds sets the foundation for strong vines and better yield in a small balcony setup.

Prepare the ideal soil mix

Bitter gourd grows best in loose, well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Prepare a mix of garden soil, compost, and cocopeat in equal proportions.
