How to grow beetroot in containers on a balcony garden

Growing beetroot in containers is a great way of enjoying fresh vegetables grown in the comfort of your own home, especially in small spaces such as balconies. Beetroot is a hardy and easy-to-maintain root vegetable that grows perfectly in containers with proper care. It is possible to enjoy fresh, sweet, and nutritious beets grown in the comfort of your own home.

2/9

Choose the right container

To successfully grow beetroot in containers, it is crucial to choose a container that is at least 10-12 inches deep. This is because beetroot grows underground, and thus it is crucial for the bulb to be able to grow properly. It is also crucial for the container to have proper drainage holes in order to prevent waterlogging, which can damage the roots. Clay pots, plastic containers, or grow bags can be used as containers for successful balcony gardening.

3/9

Use well-draining soil

The beetroot grows optimally in soil that is not compact and drains well. A mix of garden soil and compost with sand and coco peat is ideal. Beetroot does not grow optimally in compact soil that contains clay, it may result in misshapen beets. Compost is beneficial in ensuring that the soil is fertile. This allows the beetroot to grow steadily throughout its life cycle.

4/9

Select quality seeds

Always choose good-quality beetroot seeds from a reliable source. Soaking seeds in water for a few hours before sowing can improve germination. Beetroot seeds are actually clusters, so multiple seedlings may sprout from one seed. Thin them later to ensure each plant has enough space to grow properly.

5/9

Sow seeds correctly

The seeds should be sown 1-2 cm deep into the soil, ensuring that they are at least 5-7 cm apart. This will give the roots enough space to grow without any interference. The soil should then be covered, and the seeds should be watered gently. This should take around 7-14 days for the seeds to germinate.

6/9

Provide adequate sunlight

Beetroot plants require at least 5-6 hours of sunlight on a daily basis. Ensure that you have placed the containers in a sunny spot on your balcony, ensuring that they are receiving enough sunlight. Without enough sunlight, the size of the roots will be affected, and the growth will be slow.

7/9

Water consistently

The soil should always be moist, as inconsistent watering can cause hard roots. Consistent watering will ensure that the roots remain tender. One should avoid overwatering, as this may cause rotting roots. The balance of watering is essential in cultivating tender and juicy beetroot.

8/9

Thin and maintain plants

Once seedlings grow a few inches tall, thin them to maintain proper spacing. Remove weaker plants so the stronger ones can develop fully. Regularly check for weeds and remove them to avoid competition for nutrients. Lightly loosening the topsoil occasionally helps improve aeration and root growth.

9/9

Harvest at the right time

Beetroots are normally ready for harvesting in 50-70 days. It's best to harvest the beetroots when they are the size of a golf ball or slightly larger for the best flavour and quality. The beetroots should be carefully pulled out of the soil without damaging the plant. The fresh beet greens may also be used in salads or cooking.

Growing beetroot in containers on the balcony is an easy, rewarding experience, and it's perfect for urban gardeners too! It's an easy vegetable to grow, and with the right container, soil, and care, you can have an abundance of fresh and healthy beetroots in your home, not only enhancing your gardening experience but also your meals too.
