Are you mopping the floor right? 4 mistakes that make the floor dirtier after mopping

Mopping the floor over in the morning and calling it a day sounds easy as pie, right? Not necessarily, unfortunately, many people inadvertently make mistakes when mopping that can actually end up leaving floors dirtier, not cleaner.
Worse still, they can spread germs, leave sticky residue, or even erode the floor surface over time. When mopping is becoming an exercise in futility, where the floor just isn't getting quite clean enough, one of these simple mistakes is probably the cause.
Here are four mopping blunders that are easy to fall into, and how to do better, achieve cleaner outcomes each time

2/5

Using a dirty mop or bucket of water

This is the biggest and most frequent mistake. The not properly rinsed or sanitized mop turns into a breeding ground for bacteria. Submerging it repeatedly in the same bucket of water only transfers the dirt, without cleaning it.
If the mop or water is dirty, every swipe of the mop is just moving grime from place to place. This not only leaves the floor looking dull, but it also increases the opportunity for germ-spreading—especially in kitchens or bathrooms.
Try this instead
Rinse the mop head completely after and before use.
Change the bucket water regularly, especially if it gets cloudy.
If you're cleaning more than one room, change to clean water between rooms.
Clean or replace mop heads frequently, depending on how often you're mopping.

3/5

Too much cleaning solution

It's a popular myth that the more cleaning solution, the cleaner it'll be. But in reality, too much does the opposite. Too much cleaner leaves a gooey residue which attracts more dirt and dust, so it appears worse within a few hours.
That leftover residue not only attracts dirt but is also harmful to some types of flooring. Hardwood and laminate floors, for example, are chemical and moisture-sensitive and will warp or dull with contact to them.

For a change, do this instead
Read the instructions and apply the recommended amount of cleaner.
Apply a cleaner made for the floor you have.
Most days, warm plain water with a bit of mild soap is all you need for a daily clean.

4/5

Not sweeping the floor later

Mopping without a sweep or vacuum beforehand is like cleaning your kitchen counter and not picking up the crumbs. You're really just moving dirt and dust around, which gets it stuck in the surface and makes your mop less efficient.
Dry dust, dirt, and hair won't dissolve. If they are not swept up first, the mop just shoves them into a corner or scatters them in streaks on the floor.
What to do
Sweep or vacuum beforehand. This removes the surface debris and dirt and allows the mop to be more effective
Employ a microfiber broom or a vacuum cleaner with powerful suction, especially if you have pets or a lot of traffic.
Treat baseboards and corners particularly where dust tends to get stored

5/5

Walking on the floor before it dries

Once the floor is mopped, it needs to be given time to dry thoroughly. Bare feet or foot traffic on it too soon can undo all of your cleaning. Dirt, dust, and skin oil or shoe oil can easily stick to a damp floor.
Not only will it make the floor dirty again, but wet floor soiling also increases the risk of slipping and falling. On certain types of floors like wood or laminate, remaining moisture might even damage these floors in the long term.
What to do instead
Wait for the floor to dry thoroughly before walking over it.

Open windows or turn on fans to speed up drying time.
If required, dry mop across the floor using a microfiber cloth in order to remove excess moisture.
