8 ways to prevent spiders from making webs in your home!

Spiders are normal inhabitants of any ecosystem, but when they start building their webs inside your home, things can seem more creepy than fascinating. Fortunately, there are non-toxic and quite simple ways to deter them from settling indoors. These methods involve removal not just of the webs but also of spaces to hide, means of entrance, or areas where spiders can spin their silk. Here are 8 ways to keep your home spider free:

2/9

Keep your home clean and clutter-free

Spiders love dark and quiet corners, such as basements, areas behind furniture, and cluttered shelves. Cleaning regularly removes webs, eggs, and hiding places. Regular vacuuming, dusting in places not easily accessible, and reducing clutter make your home less appealing to spiders in search of undisturbed areas.

3/9

Seal entry points

They often enter through small gaps around the frames of windows, doors, vents, and pipes. Cracks sealed with caulk, repaired screens on windows, and the application of weather stripping can help eliminate such entryways. When fewer openings exist, spiders are far less likely to enter and build webs inside your living areas.

4/9

Use natural repellent sprays

Essential oils like peppermint, lavender, or tea tree oil are nature's deterrents. Mix them with water and spray them along baseboards, corners, and even door frames, and the strong scent disrupts spiders from settling in web-prone spots.

5/9

Spray vinegar solution

A simple mix of white vinegar in water, in a 50/50 proportion, serves as an effective spider repellent. Spraying this solution around the window sills, corners, and areas where webs seem to appear helps break spider trails. The acetic acid in vinegar creates an environment spiders would rather avoid.

6/9

Use diatomaceous earth (DE)

Food-grade diatomaceous earth is a natural powder that one can easily spread along walls, behind appliances, or near cracks. If spiders make their way across it, damage to their exoskeletons will occur, and they won't return. It's harmless to humans and pets if used properly.

7/9

Reduce outdoor lighting

Bright lights attract insects, which again attract spiders for food. Reducing outdoor lighting, using motion sensors, or changing to warmer-toned bulbs minimises insect activity. Fewer insects near your home mean spiders will not be as likely to move inside.

8/9

Trim vegetation around the house

Overgrown plants, shrubs, and stacked wood create perfect hiding spots for spiders. Trimming back vegetation and keeping plants away from exterior walls makes it harder for spiders to enter the house or find quiet places to build webs.

9/9

Use spider-repellent plants

These plants have strong scents that usually drive spiders away - lavender, eucalyptus, mint, rosemary, and chrysanthemums. Place them near windows, balconies, and doorways to keep spiders out. They will make the area less appealing for spiders.
