8 plants you only need to grow once for endless harvests

Some plants are worth planting once because they keep giving back for years. Many herbs and perennial vegetables live for multiple seasons, and with light, regular harvesting they continue producing fresh growth instead of need to be replanted every year. That makes them especially useful for home gardens, kitchen gardens, and small spaces where you want a reliable supply with less effort. Below are eight such plants:

2/9

Mint

Mint is one of the easiest plants to keep harvesting for a long time. It is a herbaceous perennial, so it comes back year after year, and its leaves can be picked from spring to autumn. If the plant starts to look tired, cutting it down encourages fresh young shoots, which means new leaves are ready again in just a few weeks.

3/9

Chives

Chives are a low-maintenance perennial herb that forms neat clumps of onion-flavoured leaves. You can cut the leaves regularly, and after flowering the plant can be trimmed down to the ground to push out fresh growth. Because the plant survives for multiple years, one small clump can keep supplying flavour for a very long time.

4/9

Rosemary

Rosemary is a woody, evergreen herb that can be harvested all year round once it is established. It grows best in a sunny, well-drained spot and needs very little care beyond an annual trim after flowering. Because the plant stays alive for years, you can keep snipping sprigs whenever needed for cooking, drying, or seasoning.

5/9

Oregano

Oregano is a perennial herb valued for its strong, aromatic leaves and its ability to keep producing over time. It is easy to grow, compact, and drought tolerant, which makes it a dependable garden herb. With regular picking, the plant stays productive and gives you a steady supply of leaves for Italian, Greek, and other Mediterranean dishes.

6/9

Thyme

Thyme is another long-lasting herb that keeps rewarding you after the first planting. It is evergreen, so sprigs can be picked throughout the year, although the tender new growth has the best flavour. Thyme also grows well in containers and sunny, free-draining soil, making it a practical herb for gardens where you want repeated harvests with little fuss.

7/9

Asparagus

Asparagus is one of the best examples of a true long-term crop. A well-grown planting can last about 15 years, and once established it can be harvested every spring for many seasons. Gardeners must wait until the crowns are strong before picking spears, but after that the bed can produce a dependable crop year after year.

8/9

Rhubarb

Rhubarb is a hardy perennial that keeps coming back from the same crown. Once established, you can harvest stalks through the spring and up to the end of June, as long as you leave the leaves in place so the plant can rebuild its strength for the next year. A mature plant can give generous harvests for many seasons.

9/9

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is a tender perennial that can live for many years in warm, bright conditions. Its stems can be harvested during the growing season, and established clumps can also be divided to create more plants. In colder areas it may need to be brought indoors, but with the right care it keeps supplying fragrant stems for cooking and tea.

Plants like mint, chives, rosemary, oregano, thyme, asparagus, rhubarb, and lemongrass are smart choices for gardeners who want long-term returns from a single planting. Most are perennials, and several can be clipped or picked repeatedly throughout the season. With the right soil, sunlight, and care, these plants can keep your kitchen stocked for years.
