6 long-living succulents that can thrive for over 50 years

Succulents are not just beautiful and resilient plants - they’re also symbols of endurance and longevity. With minimal care, many succulents can outlive generations, thriving for decades. Their ability to store water, adapt to harsh climates, and resist neglect makes them ideal for both beginners and seasoned plant lovers. Here are six succulents known to live for over 50 years.

2/7

Jade plant

Also known as the “money tree” or “friendship plant,” the Jade Plant has thick, glossy leaves and woody stems that make it look like a miniature tree. When cared for properly, it can live up to 70 - 100 years. It thrives in bright, indirect light and needs watering only when the soil is dry. Mature jade plants can bloom with small white or pink flowers, adding charm to any home. Its longevity and symbolism of prosperity make it a beloved houseplant passed through generations.

3/7

Haworthia

Haworthias are small, long-lived succulents native to southern Africa, often thriving for more than 50 years with minimal care. They feature striking rosettes of fleshy, patterned leaves that store water efficiently, making them resilient to drought. Preferring bright, indirect sunlight, they adapt easily to indoor conditions.

4/7

Living stones

Lithops, or “living stones,” are small succulents that resemble pebbles, camouflaging themselves to avoid predators. They can live up to 50 years with proper care. These plants thrive in well-draining sandy soil and need very little water. Their split leaves store moisture and produce a single flower annually. Because they are slow-growing, overwatering can easily harm them - patience and restraint are key. Lithops are living examples of nature’s perfect adaptation.

5/7

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is one of the most widely cultivated succulents, prized for its medicinal gel and striking appearance. Outdoors, it can live up to 50 years or more in the right conditions. It grows best in full sun, sandy soil, and with infrequent watering. As it matures, it produces offsets, allowing its lineage to continue long after the parent plant dies. Its resilience and healing properties make it both functional and timeless.

6/7

Ponytail palm

Although it is called a Ponytail palm, it is not a palm, rather a bulbous shaped succulent that stores water in its stem. This plant may have a lifespan of more than 50 and 100 years in bright light and dry conditions. It grows gradually, does not need much attention. The leaves are cascaded and in the form of ribbons, which give a tropical touch of beauty to the interiors. The fact that it lasts long has enabled it to become a perennial favourite among indoor plants lovers around the world.

7/7

Giant barrel cactus

Giant barrel cactus is an extremely long lasting succulent which is reported to survive more than 100 years in the wild. It is a slow growing plant, resulting in a big round body that becomes efficient in the storage of water. It can survive in dry deserts, with high temperatures and low precipitation. Under proper attention it can live many decades in the home gardens or conservatoires. Its grand shape and strength are the real essence of survival in nature.
