A washing machine is no longer a luxury, it’s more of a necessity. So choosing a product which is your daily necessity is quite an important task. Before you choose, it is important for you to understand your daily washing requirement and then make an informative decision. Because most of the time, people are unaware of how much load or number of clothes a machine can handle, depending on its capacity.


Understand this simply: If the capacity of your machine is 8 kg, and you are stuffing over 50 clothes, it won’t clean for sure and also hamper the performance of the machine. ​

Washing machine's capacity

You must have noticed that washing machines come with their capacity labels. It can be 6 kg, 6.5 kg, 8 kg and 10 kg or more. This shows the maximum dry clothes the machine is capable of washing in one cycle without getting stuff. A practical rule is to load dry clothes so they fill about 70–80 % of the drum.

On this note, let’s find out how much clothes your machine can handle at a time:​

6–6.5 kg Washing Machines (20 clothes at a time)

If the machine has 6-7 kg capacity, don’t throw more than 20 clothes at a time inside. The machines can handle:

3 mid-size shirts
2 pants/jeans
1 heavy towel
1 light towel
4 light pillowcases
1 medium bedsheet

7–8 kg Washing Machines (30 clothes per load)

If your machine has a 7–8 kg capacity, you can wash 30 to 35 items such as:

3 shirts
3 jeans/pants
3 heavy towels
4 pillowcases
2 bedsheets​

8–9 kg Washing Machines (about 40 garments)

The machines with 8–9 kg capacity are capable of handling heavy numbers. These are ideal for bigger families. These machines can wash over 40 garments:

5 shirts
5 jeans/pants
2 heavy towels
4 pillowcases
3 bedsheets​

10 kg+ Washing Machines (about 50 Clothes Per Load)

The 10 kg+ models are ideal for larger families. These can easily wash heavy fabrics and bulkier items. These machines are perfect for washing 50 or so items in a single cycle.

You can easily wash:

6 shirts6 pants/jeans3 light towels6 pillowcases
4 bedsheets​
