6 appliances one should never leave running and unattended and why

Contemporary living is not complete without the use of electrical appliances. Despite their convenience, efficiency, and comfort, many of these appliances pose dangers to the user when left running unattended. Fire safety professionals have long warned of the dangers of unattended appliances, which contribute significantly to household fires, water damage, and electrical shock.

It is important to recognise which appliances are most likely to cause danger and why. By being aware and taking the necessary precautions, households can avoid accidents and injuries.

Cooking appliances (Stoves, hobs)

Cooking appliances are the number one cause of home fires, especially if they are left unattended. High temperatures, grease, and open flames are conducive to fires igniting rapidly if no one is there to extinguish them. Safety tips emphasise never leaving cooking unattended and turning off the heat source before leaving the room. Many time fires are attributed to stoves, either from unattended cooking or accidental ignition.

Clothes dryers

Clothes dryers are one of the a recognised fire risk when not maintained properly, often due to lint buildup in the vent or overheating of internal parts. There are thousands of dryer fires every year, with a big percentage of these being the result of lint buildup. Since clothes dryers produce constant heat and friction, it is not a good idea to run them when you are asleep or away from home.

Washing machines

While washing machines are less likely to be a fire hazard compared to dryers, they can still be a source of significant damage. Electrical malfunctions, overheating parts, or leaky hoses could potentially ignite fires or water damage if the machine is left unattended. It is advised to avoid running the machine overnight or unattended, and to install reinforced hoses or turn off the water supply when not in use. However this rule may slightly change for smart washing machines.

Space heaters

Portable space heaters are associated with a high number of fire-related injuries and deaths, particularly when they are located near combustible materials or left unattended. Safety guidelines explicitly indicate that they should never be left on while the house is occupied or when the occupants are sleeping or away from the house. They must also be unplugged after use.

Dishwashers

Dishwashers involve the use of electricity, heat, and water. It rarely fail, but supervision and maintenance reduce risk. Malfunctions in the control panel, leaks, or electrical issues have been known to cause fires and water damage in homes. This is why safety guidelines advise against leaving dishwashers running overnight or when the house is empty.

Toasters and microwave ovens

Kitchen appliances like toasters and microwaves can also cause fires because of electrical malfunctions, overheating, or using them without any food in them. Although these appliances appear harmless, the risk of a potential problem escalating before it is noticed is increased by leaving them on or unattended, thus emphasising the need to unplug or supervise them when in use.

Household appliances simplify daily life, yet they demand responsible use. Cooking equipment, dryers, heaters, and other devices can quickly become dangerous when left running without supervision. Since many appliance-related fires stem from neglect rather than defects, simple habits, such as staying nearby, unplugging unused devices, and performing routine maintenance, play a crucial role in home safety. By remaining attentive and informed, homeowners can enjoy modern convenience while protecting their families, property, and peace of mind from preventable accidents.
