5 vegetables that should be sown in the balcony garden now to harvest in winter: Step by step guide

As the weather cools down, now it is the perfect time to start sowing winter vegetables in your balcony garden. With the right care and conditions, enjoy fresh, homegrown produce even in small spaces of balcony gardens. Here is a step-by-step guide to sow vegetables now to harvest in winter :

2/6

Spinach (Palak)

Choose a pot that's at least 6-8 inches deep with good drainage. Fill it with nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. Sow spinach seeds about half an inch deep and space them 2-3 inches apart.

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water gently to avoid disturbing the seeds.

Place the pot in a location that receives 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. Spinach thrives in cooler temperatures and partial shade.

Begin harvesting outer leaves once they reach 4-6 inches in length. This encourages new growth and prolongs the harvesting period.

3/6

Carrot

Take a deep vessel (at least 8-10 inches) of loose sandy soil. Sow carrot seeds approximately 1-2 cm deep and thin them to 2-3 inches apart when seedlings sprout.
Wet the soil often, but ensure it is well-drained to prevent root rot.
Carrots need complete sunlight to grow. Make sure that they get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Carrots normally take around 2-3 months to be ready to be harvested. Gently drag them out when they have attained a desired size.

4/6

Fenugreek (Methi)

Before sowing, soak fenugreek seeds for several hours. Pot them in a shallow tray or pot that is 1 cm deep in well-draining soil.
Keep the soil wet. Spray water softly so as not to agitate the seeds.
Fenugreek is a full sun plant although it can also bear partial shade. Make sure that they get around 4-6 hours of sun rays per day.
The leaves of fenugreek are ready after 3-4 weeks. Cut off the leaves when needed, and the plant will continue to grow back.

5/6

Radish

Plant radish seeds in containers that are well filled with loose and well-draining soil. Plant them 1 cm deep and keep 1-2 inches of spacing between them.

Spray water frequently to ensure soil is moist. Radishes grow rapidly and require constant watering.

Radishes need complete sun, although they can withstand partial shade. Make sure that they get 4-6 hours of sunlight per day.

It will take radishes 25-35 days to harvest. When they get a size desirable to us, pull them out.

6/6

Coriander (Dhaniya)

Plant coriander seeds in pots or other containers of well-draining soil. They may be planted approximately 1 cm deep and spaced 2-3 inches apart.
Maintain the soil wet, but not flooded. Spray water softly not to disrupt the seeds.

Coriander likes full sunlight although it can survive in partial shades. Make sure that they get 4-6 hours of sunlight per day.

In 3-4 weeks, it is ready to harvest coriander leaves. Cut the leaves and the plant will grow back.
