5 effective ways to keep spiders away from your home and garden (third is a magical remedy!)

Spiders are a common sight in most Indian homes. It’s a common problem during the monsoon seasons because humidity levels are on a rise. The multi-legged creatures make their ways to your kitchen and garden without seeking your permission. Although most spiders in India are non-venomous and play an important role by controlling pests, their presence indoors doesn’t look inviting or welcoming due to hygiene issues. But fortunately, there are many safe and effective, and environmentally responsible ways to reduce spider population without relying heavily on chemical pesticides.

Let’s check them out:

Seal the entry points

Prevention is better than cure. One of the first and most convenient ways to protect your home from spiders is sealing all the entry or access points. Spiders mostly get inside through small cracks and gaps around doors or windows or ventilation points. Don’t forget the drainage outlets too. Seal them all if you find a single gap. Keep an eye on walls and windows for cracks. Installing mesh screens also helps.

Spider-repellent plants

To keep the creatures away from your garden, use plants that can deter spiders. Plants like Tulsi, mint, lavender and rosemary, among others, have strong scents and are avoided by these spiders. These emit a strong smell which spiders don’t enjoy, so place these plants close to your windows and balconies.

Selection of garden lights

Outdoor spaces often serve as main habitat for spiders. Proper garden management plays an important role in long-term spider control. Keep your garden clean and clutter free. Make sure plants and creepers do not touch exterior walls. Leaf litter, and unused garden materials are the best hideout for spiders. Keep your outdoor lighting better. Using yellow or warm LED lights.

Natural sprays

If spiders have made their way to your home, you can use natural repellents and sprays to keep them away. Spiders are normally highly sensitive to strong fragrance and avoid such places. Unlike chemical pesticides, these solutions pose minimal risk to children and pets. One of the most commonly used solutions is the combination of vinegar and water. Spray the mix on windows, and entryways and doorways. Vinegar disrupts spiders’ sensory trails, discouraging them from returning. Another effective option is an essential oil spray, using oils such as peppermint and eucalyptus. Regular application helps.

Keep your house clutter-free

Spiders thrive in cluttered and dusty homes. Regular cleaning reduces their ability to build webs. It is suggested to perform routine vacuuming. Dusting helps, focus on ceilings and corners. Removing cobwebs as soon as they appear is also an important rule. It prevents spiders from returning to the same location. Keep proper ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens. It is an important factor in discouraging spider activity.
