Yoga vs Walking: Which is better for your health?

Yoga and walking are two low impact activities that give you a host of health benefits. Both yoga and walking are great for overall fitness, but specifically for toning your arms, legs, stress relief, burning calories (with or without weight loss), inculcating a positive state of mind etc. Yoga helps improve flexibility, strength, balance, and mental calmness, while walking helps improve heart health, burns calories, and boosts mood. It is one of the easiest ways to stay active. But which one is better?

2/6

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga stretches your muscles and joints, making your body more flexible. Many yoga poses build muscle strength, especially in the core and arms. Yoga improves your balance and coordination, which is important as you age. Regular yoga helps correct posture and reduce back pain.

3/6

Walking

Walking is a great way to strengthen your heart and lungs. Walking burns calories and helps maintain a healthy weight. It supports strong bones and reduces the risk of osteoporosis, along with overall fitness and strength endurance. Not only that, it allows you to move your body physically from one place to another, hence can only be done in an open, green environment.

4/6

Mental benefits

Yoga’s breathing and meditation help lower stress and anxiety. Many people find yoga helps them sleep more peacefully. On the other hand, walking releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins, which lift your mood. A walk, especially in nature, can help clear your thoughts and reduce stress.

5/6

Which is better for you?

The answer depends on your goals and preferences. If you want to improve flexibility, balance, and reduce stress, yoga might be better. If your goal is to improve heart health, lose weight, or build endurance, walking could be the best choice. Both activities are low-impact and gentle on the joints, making them suitable for all ages.

6/6

Can you do both?

Yes, Yoga and walking complement each other well. You can start your day with a walk to wake up your body and end it with some mild yoga to relax and stretch. Combining both can give you the best of both worlds-strong body, healthy heart, and calm mind.
