Tackling obesity in a healthy manner

The obesity problem casts a shadow over public health, not just in India but on a global scale. Research indicates that both generalised and abdominal obesity are of serious concern in India.
Fortunately, fighting back against obesity is not impossible. One can plan a weight loss journey by setting some realistic goals for weight management:
Reducing bodyweight
Short-term goal: 5–10%, or 0.5 to 1 kg per week of weight loss.
Improving co-morbidities
Interim goal: maintenance of reduced weight
Long-term goal: Additional weight loss, if desired

2/7

Dietary Changes

Healthy eating is the cornerstone of weight control. Cutting calorie intake by 500–1000 kcal/day can give weight loss a start. For women, the goal should be around 1200–1500 kcal/day for women and 1500–1800 kcal/day for men. But remember to maintain these changes: consistency is the key factor for long-term success.

3/7

Daily Exercise

Of course, physical activity is also important for moderate weight loss. Exercise plans tailored to individual needs are recommended. Starting off with light-to-moderate-intensity activities like brisk walking, they should be gradually made more strenuous. Try for 30 to 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise most days, or add high-intensity training for an extra metabolic burst. Also, don't neglect strength training; it builds muscle and encourages overall health.

4/7

Hydration

Drink water to stay well hydrated throughout the day. Thirst can occasionally be confused with hunger. Water also facilitates toxin removal and digestion.

5/7

Sleep

Make sure you get seven to nine hours of good sleep every night. Hormones that control appetite and hunger can be upset by sleep deprivation, which can boost desires and cause overeating.

6/7

Pharmacotherapy

Dr. Randeep Wadhawan, HOD - Department of Minimal Access Surgery, Bariatric & Metabolic, and Gastrointestinal Surgery, Manipal Hospital, Dwarka says, “If you are overweight, with a BMI above 25 kg/m2 in any case or one that is combined with diabetes or hypertension and above 27 kg/m2, then medication also becomes a useful component besides the lifestyle adjustments. Currently the only approved drug in India to manage obesity, orlistat blocks fat absorption. Individual suitability Healthcare professionals should guide medication use by assessing individual needs and recommending the most suitable course of treatment.”
By taking a multi-pronged approach that includes lifestyle adjustments, medicinal interventions, and even surgery if needed, patients are able to continuously lose weight effectively.

7/7

Surgical Intervention for obese people

It is bariatric and metabolic surgery that plays a role in patients who are overweight or obese (BMI above 30 kg/m2) with long-term severe conditions, but also for those whose BMI is higher than 35 kg/m2 who have already tried non-surgical weight loss programmes yet still meet these eligibility criteria. To further decrease calorie absorption, malabsorptive procedures such as One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass or Duodenal Switch bypass part of the small intestine are also performed. Laparoscopic and robotic techniques provide minimally invasive alternatives with more rapid recovery and better cosmetic results.
However, remember that obesity management is a process, not an end point. Exuding confidence that a healthy future is within your grasp. If people will just change their eating habits and start exercising (as well as having proper medical interventions or undergoing necessary surgery in extreme cases), they can get back to enjoying the life of a fit individual.
