Remove dandruff naturally: 4 home remedies that actually work

Dandruff is one of those stubborn hair concerns that can show up without warning, and just as quickly become frustrating. Research shows that when the scalp’s microbiome or pH shifts even slightly, it can trigger flaking, itching, and irritation. While medicated shampoos are effective, several natural ingredients have also demonstrated antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, or barrier-supporting properties in studies. Below are four such evidence-supported home remedies that may help manage dandruff naturally:

2/5

Coconut oil

A long-term study of the scalp microbiome among Indian women (healthy and with dandruff) found that regular topical application of coconut oil changed the scalp’s microbial composition and correlated with improved dandruff-related parameters.
How to use:
Use virgin or cold-pressed coconut oil rather than refined or heavily processed oils for maximum benefit.
Apply a small amount to the scalp and massage gently.
Leave for around 20–30 minutes , then wash thoroughly with a gentle shampoo to avoid buildup.
Use 1–2 times per week, rather than daily, overuse or applying on very oily scalp, may lead to greasiness or even worsen flaking for some.

Note: Safe for most people, but may not be suitable for very oily scalps Also read: You are taking these 3 supplements wrong, reveals top doctor and longevity expert

3/5

Aloe vera

A study published in NIH formulated herbal shampoos including Aloe vera extract (with other herbs) and reported antidandruff activity, suggesting potential of aloe-based extracts in controlling fungal causes of dandruff.

How to use effectively:

Use fresh Aloe vera gel, scooped directly from the leaf
Apply a thin layer directly to the scalp.
Leave on for 20–30 minutes.
Rinse off with a mild shampoo.
Use 2–3 times per week for best results.

4/5

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is a natural essential oil extracted from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant, which is native to Australia. A randomized, double-blind clinical trial using 5% tea tree oil shampoo for 4 weeks resulted in 41% improvement in dandruff severity, and also reduced itchiness and greasiness.

How to use for tea tree oil for dandruff treatment:Note: Tea tree oil is very strong, so direct use is not recommended. Instead, mix it with regular shampoo.
Add 5–10 drops of tea tree oil to 100 ml of shampoo.
Shake well before each use.
Massage into the scalp for 1–2 minutes, then rinse.

This method is widely used in studies because it keeps the concentration mild and safe.

5/5

Neem

NIH study titled “Effect of Neem Leaf Paste Application on Dandruff” confirms that neem leaf paste is an effective natural remedy for reducing dandruff levels. A significant improvement was observed in the experimental group, where most participants experienced no or minimum dandruff after the intervention.

How to use:
The Participants in the NIH study applied neem leaf paste on scalp, other methods to use are:
Mix neem powder with water or aloe gel to make a smooth paste.
Apply directly to the scalp.
Leave for 15–20 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly and shampoo lightly.
For best results, combine these natural treatments with gentle scalp hygiene, regular shampooing, and moisturizing practices. If dandruff persists or worsens despite home care, consulting a dermatologist is recommended to explore medically proven treatments.
