How does fatty liver affect us?

Fatty liver disease, also known as Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), is a silent but serious condition affecting millions worldwide. Research from the Karolinska Institutet has revealed that individuals with MASLD face almost twice the mortality rate of the general population. This disease, primarily linked to obesity and metabolic issues, does not just harm the liver—it significantly increases the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other major illnesses.

How fatty liver affects heart health

A healthy liver is essential for maintaining balanced cholesterol levels and preventing inflammation. However, when fat accumulates in the liver, it triggers chronic inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which are major contributors to cardiovascular disease.According to a recent research, the risk of dying from heart disease in MASLD patients is 54% higher than in the general population. This means that even if someone doesn’t feel symptoms, their heart could be at serious risk.

3/5

Other dangerous risks of fatty liver

While heart disease is a major concern, MASLD is linked to several other life-threatening conditions:

Liver cancer and cirrhosis: People with MASLD have a 35 times higher risk of dying from liver cancer and 27 times higher mortality from liver disease.

Non-liver cancers: A fatty liver can increase cancer risks in other parts of the body, such as the colon and pancreas, by 47%.

Diabetes and metabolic disorders: The condition worsens insulin resistance, increasing the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.

Kidney disease: Fatty liver has been associated with declining kidney function, leading to chronic kidney disease.

Infections and respiratory issues: Weakened immunity from MASLD makes individuals more vulnerable to severe infections and respiratory diseases.

4/5

How to check if you have fatty liver

One of the biggest dangers of MASLD is that it often goes undetected in its early stages. Since it usually doesn’t cause noticeable symptoms, here’s how to check if you are at risk:

Blood tests: Elevated liver enzymes (ALT and AST) can be a sign of liver fat buildup.

Ultrasound or fibroscan: Imaging tests help detect fat accumulation in the liver.

Liver biopsy (in severe cases): This confirms the extent of liver damage.

Monitor risk factors: If you have obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, your chances of MASLD are higher.

5/5

Preventing and managing fatty liver disease

The good news is that fatty liver disease is reversible if caught early. Here’s what you can do:

Maintain a healthy diet: Focus on fibre-rich foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats while reducing processed sugars and refined carbs.

Exercise regularly: Even a 30-minute walk daily can reduce liver fat.

Manage weight and blood sugar: Keeping a healthy weight and controlling diabetes lowers the risk.
