15-30% of cases in ENT OPD these days are related to sinus problem: Doctor
Sinus refers to the hollow cavities located within the bones of the face. These air-filled spaces serve various functions, including filtering and moisturizing the air we breathe, as well as enhancing our vocal resonance. However, when these sinuses become inflamed or infected, they can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms. Common sinus symptoms include nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, headaches, and post-nasal drip. Additionally, individuals with sinus issues may experience a reduced sense of smell or taste and feel generally fatigued. Chronic sinusitis persists for more than three months and may be associated with more severe symptoms like chronic coughing and bad breath and is a common occurrence during the winter months.
“Multiple factors contribute to sinus issues during winter. From low humidity levels and indoor allergens to viral infections to centrally heated environments, all these factors can trigger or worsen sinus problems during the colder months. Understanding these factors enables individuals to take preventive measures against winter sinus troubles. Many people are experiencing sinus problems due to the drop in temperature. This year number of such cases has increased in my private practice as compared to previous year. Last 2 months we have seen almost 15-30% cases in ENT OPD are related to sinus problem. These patients are between 20 and 40 years of age who come with sinus complaints.” Dr Rajendra Waghela, Consultant ENT & Endoscopic Surgeon, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai.
Vital tips to prevent sinusitis in winter
Steam inhalation can be beneficial for soothing and moisturizing the nasal passages, easing congestion, and encouraging sinus drainage. Using a humidifier, staying hydrated, drinking warm fluids, and taking a hot shower can be helpful. Maintaining hygiene in your living space is important, including regular cleaning and dusting, vacuuming carpets, and ensuring good ventilation. Applying warm compresses to your face can alleviate sinus pain and pressure by promoting drainage. Getting enough rest and elevating your head while sleeping can aid in sinus drainage and reduce congestion,” said Dr Dang.Comments
