Is there a least harmful alcohol? 5 drinks ranked based on their alcohol content

Alcohol is not a healthy choice in general, but some are better than others. According to the NFHS-5 (2019-21), National Family Health Surveys. Approximately 22.4% of Indian men and 0.7% of Indian women aged 15-49 reported consuming alcohol. Although this consumption also varies significantly across different states and regions. Several states, such as Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, and Telangana, report a higher percentage of alcohol consumption among men. For a percentage this high, there should be a healthier alternative to hardcore alcohol options.
Let us explore some alternatives

2/6

Beer

The most widely consumed alcoholic drink globally typically has the lowest alcohol content. Its alcohol by volume (ABV) ranges from 4% to 6%. Light beers may have as little as 3% ABV. Beer is made through the fermentation of grains like barley and is often enjoyed chilled. Due to its lower alcohol content, it is usually consumed in larger volumes than spirits.

3/6

Wine

Little stronger than beer, with an average ABV ranging from 12% to 15%. Red wines generally contain slightly higher alcohol content than white wines, owing to differences in fermentation. A drink made by fermenting crushed grapes is popular in both social and ceremonial settings. Wine is often praised for containing antioxidants like resveratrol, especially in the red wine variety.

4/6

Cider

Usually falls between 4% and 6%, much like beer. Made from fermented apple juice, cider often has less sugar and additives than many flavored drinks or cocktails. Because of its modest alcohol concentration, it can serve as a milder substitute for heavier beverages like fortified wines or spirits.

5/6

Cognac

Cognac generally has an ABV of about 40%, similar to most spirits that are distilled. This level of strength provides a balance between the complex, rich flavors established during its aging and a smooth, palatable finish. The 40% ABV allows the cognac to keep its personality and fragrance while delivering a comforting heat when consumed neat or mixed in cocktails.

6/6

Gin

Gin is a distilled beverage flavored chiefly with juniper berries, whose piney and aromatic flavor distinguishes it. Gin has its origins in Europe centuries ago and is produced by distilling neutral grain spirit with juniper and other botanicals such as coriander, angelica root, and citrus peel. Gin exists in various styles, including London Dry, Old Tom, and Plymouth gin. Traditionally, gin contains between 37.5% and 47% ABV of alcohol, making it a very good all-around base spirit for most classic cocktails, such as the Martini and Gin & Tonic.
