Pirola, the new COVID variant is spreading fast

A heavily-mutated Covid-19 variant known as BA.2.86, or "Pirola," has emerged and is causing alarm among scientists worldwide. Some have even termed Pirola as ‘the real deal’, signifying the intensity in which it might spread and affect people. This variant, originating in Israel and Denmark, has quickly spread to several countries, including the UK, US, South Africa, Canada, and more. As global cases of Pirola double in just a week, concerns about its potential to trigger another wave of the pandemic are growing, the Daily Mail reported.

Pirola has spread to two more countries

Pirola has been detected in various countries, including the UK, US, Israel, Denmark, South Africa, Portugal, Thailand, Switzerland, Sweden, and Canada. This widespread presence is raising concerns about its global impact. Another thing to be noted is that the cases all around the world have doubled in just a week. In the USA, CDC has confirmed on August 17, four cases of Pirola. Then on August 18, the UK Health Security Agency reported a single case of the virus. Denmark too reported another case on the same day taking the count to 3. Following that, a case was detected in Virginia on 22nd August on a patient who had come back from Japan. On August 23, 2 cases of Pirola were detected in South Africa.

Pirola was detected in wastewater

Reports suggest that Pirola has been identified through wastewater samples in Switzerland, Thailand and the United States. Scientists have been using wastewater to detect the strain as it contains stools of infected people. The testing now indicates the presence of the variant in four separate continents. Additionally, Pirola's emergence coincides with the arrival of another variant known as Eris, scientifically referred to as EG.5.1. These developments underscore the ongoing challenges posed by evolving Covid-19 variants.

How is Pirola different from its ancestors?

Pirola carries over 30 mutations on its spike protein, the target of vaccines. Some of these mutations have unknown functions, while others may help the virus evade the immune system. This complex mutation pattern adds to concerns about Pirola's behavior.
With respect to COVID, testing and sequencing efforts have decreased since the WHO removed its pandemic emergency declarations.

Precautions to follow

Governments are cautious but have not designated Pirola as a “variant of concern” as of yet. They aim to avoid imposing stringent restrictions unless a severe variant, like a “doomsday variant,” emerges. Additionally, while some experts label Pirola as the most striking variant since Omicron, others caution against panic. Current evidence does not indicate that Pirola poses a greater threat than previous variants. But, some reports do suggest that vaccines may not be able to provide full protection against it.

What should you do?

As of now, with the limited information, we can say that the virus is spreading fast and taking basic precautions again is advised. Start wearing protective masks again and sanitizing your hands whenever possible. Also avoid traveling to countries where the virus has been detected. If you have symptoms like fever, body pain, rashes, conjunctivitis, diarrhea or the likes it will be better to get tested and isolate yourself to protect others.
