Lesser known signs of the COVID-19

In just a month, Omicron has taken over the world as the new dominant variant of COVID-19. The highly transmissible mutant variant has again led to a rise in the cases, increasing the probability of another COVID wave. Looking at the current situation, it is crucial to be well aware of all the common and uncommon symptoms of the respiratory infection to take action at the earliest and prevent any untoward event.

Common signs of COVID-19

Though Omicron is said to cause varied symptoms it is not yet known if they are different from the original strain or not. It has been reported by many that the symptoms of the mutant strain are different from the original ones, the WHO is yet to confirm it. The initial symptoms of the original and all the variants of the COVID-19 includes runny nose, headaches, high-grade fever, sore throat and loss of smell and taste. In some cases, the person may even develop rashes on the skin, conjunctivitis and diarrhoea. Symptoms may vary from person to person and their health condition.

Signs that you need to seek emergency help

While low oxygen saturation levels and breathing difficulty require hospitalisation, there are several other symptoms that are equally critical. A lesser-known one appears on your skin, lips and nails. Pale, grey, or blue-coloured skin, lips, or nail beds also require immediate medical attention. The change in colour depends on skin tone, but it should not be taken lightly. The change or discolouration is easily visible in people with a darker skin tone, especially around lips, eyes, or mouth.

4/6

What leads to the change in colour?

Change in the colour of the nails also referred to as COVID nails or Beau’s lines is one of the symptoms exhibited during COVID infection. In this, the nails show dents or ridges that run horizontally. Changes in the colour of the skin and nail can be due to cyanosis, which usually occurs due to lack of oxygen. When bright red blood cells don’t have enough oxygen it turns a dark bluish-red colour. It is a medical emergency and should not be taken lightly. If the change in the colour of the skin is accompanied by other symptoms like trouble breathing or pain in the chest one should call the doctor immediately.

5/6

Can some other disease lead to discolouration?

The discolouration is associated with COVID, but it could also be due to other conditions like lung or heart diseases or blood clots. In rare cases, the discolouration may also appear without other symptoms.. In any condition, it is best not to take the symptoms lightly.

How to prevent oneself from COVID

Looking at the rising number of COVID cases across the globe and the threat of third covid wave due to omicron, it is best to follow COVID norms and not take any symptoms associated with coronavirus lightly. Wear a mask, maintain social distancing and follow health hygiene. If you witness any symptoms associated with COVID-19 immediately isolate yourself and get yourself tested.
