5 supplements that may help lower High Cholesterol

High cholesterol occurs when there is excess of cholesterol (fatty substance) in the blood. The condition is the primary risk factor (along with High BP) for heart disease, stroke, and other health issues, because it can lead to plaque buildup in the arteries, narrowing them and restricting blood flow. The good news however, is that the condition is usually reversible, often even within months, with the right diet, exercise, medicines, and even supplements. However, supplements, though effective, should be used with caution, and only after discussion with the doctor. Here are 5 dietary supplements which may help maintain healthy cholesterol levels....

2/10

Psyllium Husk

The seeds of Plantago ovata produce natural Psyllium husk, which is popular as a dietary fiber substance. Medical experts have validated psyllium husk as an effective digestive aid, because it simultaneously reduces levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) according to research. The process of Psyllium works by attracting cholesterol and bile acids in your digestive system, before removing them from your body. Research shows that daily consumption of 5–10 grams of Psyllium, reduces average LDL cholesterol levels by 6 points. The supplement also promotes smooth bowel movements. However, drink enough water during psyllium consumption to prevent constipation from occurring.

3/10

Plant sterols and stanols

Natural occurrences of these plant compounds are found in limited amounts in vegetables, as well as nuts and seeds. Plant sterols and stanols appear in many foods and supplements as fortified ingredients today. The molecules in these substances match the structure of cholesterol, which prevents gut absorption of cholesterol. The daily intake of 2 grams through food or supplements has been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol by as much as 10% in different studies, with LDL cholesterol decreasing by 4–10% in various scientific investigations. Plant sterol supplements are safe for most, but you should consult your doctor before taking them.

4/10

Red yeast rice

The fermentation process of rice with Monascus purpureus yeast, produces red yeast rice. The fermentation process of red yeast rice produces monacolin K, which shares identical chemical properties with statin drugs prescribed by doctors. The enzyme HMG-CoA reductase which the body requires for cholesterol production, becomes blocked by this substance.

Research indicates that LDL cholesterol decreases between 6–7% when patients take 4–10 mg of monacolin K supplements, although some studies show reductions reaching 20–25%. Product quality along with dosage amounts determine the effectiveness of the treatment.

However, red yeast rice can interact with medications while its usage is limited to specific individuals.

5/10

Omega-3 fatty acids

The essential fatty acids known as omega-3, exist primarily in fatty fish species including salmon, mackerel and sardines. People can buy omega-3 fatty acid supplements over the counter from stores.

The body absorbs omega-3 fatty acids which have minimal effects on LDL cholesterol, while simultaneously decreasing triglycerides and elevating HDL cholesterol levels. Medical professionals prescribe omega-3 supplements to treat patients with elevated triglyceride levels. Omega-3 supplements help heart health when used with diets that contain sufficient amounts of these fatty acids.

Always select omega-3 supplements of high quality because they ensure purity.

6/10

Soluble fiber supplements

Our digestive system contains soluble fiber, which can be obtained from food sources such as oats, beans as well as apples and citrus fruits. We usually get two types of soluble fiber supplements: beta-glucans and methylcellulose.

The digestive system absorbs soluble fiber to trap cholesterol particles that prevent certain amounts of cholesterol from entering bloodstream circulation.

Daily consumption of soluble fiber leads to reductions in both total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol levels. The recommended daily intake consists of 25 grams of fiber for women, and 38 grams for men with at least 5–10 grams from soluble fiber sources.

People can achieve their daily fiber goals through the combination of dietary supplements and fiber-rich food consumption.

What is the meaning of high cholesterol?

High cholesterol, also known as hypercholesterolemia, is a condition where there's an excess of a waxy, fat-like substance called cholesterol in your blood. While some cholesterol is necessary for building healthy cells, too much of it can be dangerous. The primary concern is the accumulation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), often called "bad" cholesterol, which can form plaque on the walls of your arteries. This process, known as atherosclerosis, causes arteries to narrow and harden, making it harder for blood to flow. This increases the risk of serious conditions like heart attack and stroke.

Rather than treat the symptoms of an underlying disease.. look at the root cause.. LDL serves a purpose in the body.. it transports fatty acids to every cell.. and it is also part of a repair mechanism.. when blood vessels are damaged, LDL assists in the repair.. so levels increase.. so fix the root cause.. reduce arterial damage .. eliminate sugar and drastically reduce carbohydrates!
