How to know when our body has too much bad cholesterol

High bad cholesterol (LDL) mostly works silently, slowly building up in arteries without making much noise. That’s why it is called a “hidden threat.” But sometimes, the body does try to send subtle hints before things take a serious turn. Recognising these early signs can help in taking timely action, before they lead to heart attacks or strokes.

2/9

Sudden yellowish patches around the eyes

Small yellowish bumps or flat patches near the eyelids may actually be cholesterol deposits under the skin. While not painful, they can indicate high LDL or triglyceride levels. Doctors often check cholesterol levels when these appear, as they may be the body’s way of showing that fat is circulating excessively in the blood.

3/9

A white or grey ring around the cornea

While corneal arcus can appear naturally with age, spotting it in people under 45 could be a sign of high cholesterol or other lipid disorders. It occurs when cholesterol deposits form in the cornea, and though vision is not affected, it may be a quiet warning from the body about rising LDL.

4/9

Unusual tingling or numbness in hands and feet

High LDL can narrow the smaller blood vessels, reducing blood supply to extremities. This poor circulation can sometimes cause tingling, numbness, or a “pins and needles” sensation. While many conditions can cause this feeling, when it happens without a clear reason, cholesterol levels might be worth checking.

5/9

Persistent jaw pain while chewing

When arteries supplying blood to the face and jaw are partially blocked due to plaque build-up, chewing or speaking for long periods may cause discomfort. This sign is rare but can be linked to advanced cholesterol-related artery narrowing, especially if it occurs with other unusual symptoms like fatigue or shortness of breath.

6/9

Frequent indigestion or mild discomfort after meals

While often caused by diet or acidity, sluggish blood flow to the stomach due to plaque build-up in arteries can sometimes trigger mild, recurring discomfort after meals. If this happens regularly without obvious dietary reasons, it could be linked to cholesterol-related circulation changes.

7/9

The right time to get cholesterol checked

Before symptoms appear, experts recommend cholesterol screening every 4-6 years for healthy adults, and more often for those with risk factors like family history, obesity, or high blood pressure.

When subtle signs show up: If any of the above symptoms appear without a clear cause, testing should not be delayed.

After major life changes: Significant weight gain, pregnancy, or post-menopause can shift cholesterol levels, making a check-up important.

[Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only and should not replace professional medical advice. Symptoms can have multiple causes, and only a qualified healthcare provider can confirm whether cholesterol is high. Regular screenings remain the safest way to detect and manage cholesterol-related health risks.]
