With the onset of the new year, we tend to set new resolutions, rethink our priorities, and define new goals, especially in terms of our health. There is a certain level of readiness with renewed energy, making us want to work towards achieving our health goals. However, the challenge lies not in making these resolutions or goals but in staying true to our fitness goals. Thus, it is important to set the right goals that are simple, achievable, and sustainable.
Here are five tips for building a healthy lifestyle in 2024:
Choose Nutrient-dense whole foods
Do not opt for restrictive fad diets or specific food groups that will create nutritional deficiencies in the long run. Instead, opt for whole, natural, and seasonal foods that give you all the nutrients that your body needs. Incorporate colourful fruits and vegetables, whole grains and pulses, lean meats and low-fat dairy products, and good fats from nuts and seeds. The more colourful your plate, the more vitamins, minerals, and fibre you get to keep your body healthy. Avoid overly processed and calorie-dense foods that have no nutritional value and trim out added sugars, fats, salt and replace them with natural sweeteners, good fats, and herbs. It is important to not skip meals as it can lead to energy depletion, impaired concentration and poor metabolism. Eating healthy doesn't have to be monotonous or tasteless. Choosing all food groups will help you to nourish your body rather than deprive it.
Redefine your workout routine
Becoming active doesn't mean enrolling in a fancy gym or buying expensive equipment that you may never use. Being active means performing an activity or a sport that you genuinely enjoy. The idea is to move and stay active at least 3 to 5 days a week. This can involve taking a walk in the park, dancing to your favourite songs or performing a daily yoga routine. Regular physical exercise helps boost energy, stamina and mood. Staying active also helps in preventing metabolic disorders as well as in weight management. Remember to choose an activity you love and be consistent with it. If you do not have a workout routine, be realistic and set a small goal, such as going for a walk after dinner twice a week or taking the stairs instead of the lift. What is crucial is to find a routine that works for you and then stick to it.
Make water your primary beverage
Drinking more water is a simple yet powerful tip to move towards a healthier self. Water is the healthiest and most natural beverage you can drink. It harbours no additives, sugars, artificial sweeteners, or other questionable ingredients. Drinking enough water ensures your blood will carry plenty of oxygen to all the cells of your body, flush out toxins, maintain immunity and keep your energy levels high. If drinking plain water feels boring, try infused waters or detox waters. Adding fruits, herbs, or vegetables in water will also add a burst of vitamins and antioxidants. Remember to keep a bottle of water with you throughout the day to reach your hydration goals.
Aim for proper restful sleep
In today's world, sleep often takes a backseat, with constant night shifts, binge-watching television and late-night parties. Proper sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and has long-term benefits. When you sleep, your hormones balance and your body uses the time to heal and repair itself. Lack of good sleep can impact our cognitive function, lead to lowered productivity as well as storage of fat and weight gain. Try to create a daily bedtime sleep schedule to ensure you get 6 to 8 hours of uninterrupted quality sleep. Have a gap of at least 2 hours between dinner and bedtime. Turn off electronic gadgets and create a comfortable sleep environment by listening to relaxing music, reading books or sipping warm herbal teas like chamomile or turmeric milk.
Pay attention to your mental health
In the daily hustle and bustle of life, our mental health often goes for a toss. Modern life induces stress through factors like demanding work, financial pressures and societal expectations, impacting mental well-being. This year, make it a point to stress less and live more. Find activities that help you unwind, whether it is reading a book, taking short breaks, or spending time in nature. Spend a few minutes each day meditating. Go for a small vacation to relax and unwind. If you are religious, take the time to practice your faith. Learn to say no when needed and prioritize self-care. Set boundaries with people in your life that may increase stress or bring about toxic energy. Do not be afraid to walk away from friendships and relationships that negatively affect your health.
As you kick off the journey to a healthier new year, remember to start simple and small. Rather than getting distracted by the latest wellness trends and overwhelming advice, stick to the basic fundamental pillars of health and well-being. Here's to a new year filled with health, happiness, and the pursuit of a better you.
