3 nutrients that may help deal with microplastics in the body

Everyday we’re hearing the term “microplastics” and how it’s destroying the planet’s ecosystem. These same particles have now reached inside our bodies. Global health agencies and institutions like Harvard Medical School have confirmed that microplastics have been detected throughout the human body, including in the blood, saliva, liver, kidneys, and placenta. Microplastic exposure has been linked to inflammation, oxidative stress, hormonal interference and a number of other health issues.

2/6

No proven ‘detox’

It is important that we understand that there is no proven way to ‘detox’ microplastics from the body and the long-term health effects are still being studied. However, scientific evidence shows that certain nutrients may help the body limit microplastic absorption and reduce damage.

3/6

What scientific evidence says

A study published in MDPI, titled “Antioxidant Intervention Against Microplastic Hazards”, shows that antioxidants may counteract the inducing effects of oxidative stress from microplastics.
The study highlights the protective roles of certain nutrients. These include:

4/6

Polyphenols

These are potent antioxidants. Rich dietary sources of polyphenols include blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, green tea, back tea, grapes, red wine, dark chocolate, and spices such as turmeric and cloves.

5/6

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water‑soluble vitamin well known for its antioxidant properties. Rich sources of vitamin C are: Guava, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli, brussels sprouts, Amla, oranges.

6/6

Vitamin E

This is an underrated, but very important nutrient that the body needs. Vitamin E can help protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. Common food sources of Vitamin E include: Nuts and seeds like almonds, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, spinach, broccoli, and avocado.
