​World Diabetes Day: Easy ways to control diabetes this festive season

The most awaited festival of the year, Diwali, is here. While everyone is gearing up for the occasion, diabetics have to be doubly cautious about maintaining their blood sugar levels while also enjoying the sweets and snacks.

If you can relate, here are some easy ways to manage diabetes while enjoying the festival of lights.

It has been found that people with pre-existing blood sugar levels are noted to have an increase in blood sugar level by 15 to 18 per cent during the festive season, as per the data from the past three years.

Interestingly, this year Diwali coincides with World Diabetes Day, which is on 14th November. Here is how you can feast on your favourite foods and still remain healthy during the Diwali celebrations.

​Portion control

Instead of having 2-3 bigger meals in a day, try to have 4-5 small meals instead. Having small meals will prevent sudden sugar spike and keep your diabetes under check.

​Prepare healthy snacks at home

Prepare some healthy snacks using dry fruits and nuts. Replace the table sugar with gur or stevia and make sure to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.

​Do not overeat

Overeating is a very common scenario during the festive season. To avoid overeating, choose a smaller plate to eat in. Try not to use gadgets or talk to people while you eat.

​Choose dark chocolates

Chocolates are everyone's favourite. But this Diwali, try to choose dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate as they have less amount of sugar. Avoid having sugary drinks like cola and packed juices. Instead, choose drinks like lemonade, coconut water or just plain water.

​Choose brown rice

Choosing brown rice over white can be an easy way to manage your blood sugar level. White rice has a high glycemic index that can lead to a sudden spike in your blood sugar level.

​Avoid bakery foods

Not all bakeries do what their labels claim, thus it's best to avoid bakery biscuits and other snacks. Also avoid having deep-fried snacks like samoas, pakodas and jalebi.

​Do not overdo the alcohol

We know Diwali is the festival of fun and feast. But do not go overboard with alcohol. Alcohol has a large amount of sugar, which can raise your blood sugar level.

​Be physically active

During the festive season, workout takes a backseat. Aim for at least 30 minutes of workout. If you cannot spare 30 minutes at once, break your workout into two parts of 15 minutes of each.
