US gut doctor explains 8 reasons why drinking lemon water daily might be the best hydration tip

A warm cup that’s more than just a trend

Lemon water shows up on morning routine lists, wellness blogs, and detox plans. But how much of that is true? Dr Saurabh Sethi, a well-known American gastroenterologist, believes that lemon water can play a role in supporting gut health, but not for the reasons most people assume. He doesn’t call it a miracle drink, but rather a smart, balanced hydration habit with some real benefits, if done right. Here are 8 key reasons why lemon water might just deserve a spot on the table.

2/11

For morning hydration

Many wake up dehydrated after hours of sleep. While plain water is effective, lemon water offers a more enjoyable and flavorful way to start the day. According to Dr Sethi, sipping lemon water, especially warm, can help stimulate saliva production and make hydration feel more satisfying. The truth? There’s no magic, but the mild citrus taste often encourages people to drink more fluids. And that alone is a win for the gut.

3/11

A natural source of vitamin C, but don’t expect a flood of it

One of the most common beliefs is that lemon water is packed with vitamin C. Here’s the real picture: lemon juice does contain vitamin C, but one lemon only offers about 30–40 mg, which is roughly half of the daily need for an adult. So yes, it contributes to daily intake, but it shouldn’t be the only source.

4/11

Feels soothing, but keep it warm, not hot

Many gut specialists agree that warm fluids are easier on the digestive system, especially in the morning. Lemon water, when sipped warm (not hot), feels calming to the stomach lining. This can be especially helpful for those with sensitive digestion.

5/11

Not a detox drink, and that’s okay

Let’s bust the myth: lemon water does not detox the body. According to Dr Sethi, the liver and kidneys are the body’s real detox heroes. No drink, including lemon water, has the power to ‘flush out toxins.’ However, drinking water regularly helps support the body’s natural cleansing processes, and adding lemon just makes the habit more enjoyable.

6/11

Can help support digestion, but not in the way advertised

Dr Sethi explains that lemon water doesn’t directly break down food or jump-start digestion in some magical way. However, by stimulating saliva and offering mild acidity, it may encourage gastric juices to become active, helping the gut ease into its daily job. It’s a subtle effect, but one that adds to the gentle wake-up call lemon water offers the digestive system.

7/11

A gut-friendly choice, because it’s simple and whole

One of the main reasons he recommends lemon water is its gut-friendliness. No added sugars, no chemicals, just water and fresh citrus. These small, wholesome choices form the backbone of long-term gut health. While it doesn’t contain fiber or probiotics, it aligns with the philosophy of whole, unprocessed living.

8/11

Could harm teeth if sipped all day

One hidden risk is to the enamel. Lemon’s acidity can wear down the outer layer of teeth if sipped repeatedly throughout the day. You can try using a straw and rinsing the mouth with plain water afterwards. Drinking lemon water once a day, preferably in the morning, is safer and reduces the risk of dental erosion.

9/11

It can sometimes trigger reflux

Here’s where caution is needed. Lemons are acidic, and for those with acid reflux or GERD, lemon water, especially on an empty stomach, may cause burning or discomfort. Dr Sethi suggests testing it slowly, and not continuing if it leads to heartburn. Warm plain water or fennel tea might be better choices in such cases.

10/11

These help too

Apart from hydration, getting enough sun and going out can also help

11/11

Not for everyone

Despite its numerous health benefits, its not for everyone. If you are adding it to your daily routine, it is important to discuss with your healthcare provider.
