What are the benefits of consuming 1 garlic each day?

There are several ingredients in the kitchen that offer so many benefits. Garlic has been a staple in almost all kitchen and medicine cabinets for centuries, known for its distinctive flavour and health benefits. Consuming raw garlic daily can lead to several positive health outcomes. Here’s why adding just one clove of raw garlic into your daily routine could be a game-changer for your health.

2/7

Gives a boost to the immune system

Garlic is packed with nutrients that can enhance your immune system. It is rich in vitamins C and B6, manganese, and selenium, all of which contribute to improved immune function. Regular consumption of garlic has been linked to a reduced frequency of colds and flu. A study involving 146 participants published in the US National Library of Medicine, showed that those who took garlic supplements daily had 63% fewer colds and their colds were 70% shorter than the placebo group.

3/7

Helps in reducing blood pressure

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a common ailment that can lead to severe health problems if left unchecked. Garlic can significantly reduce blood pressure in individuals with hypertension. The allicin compound in garlic, which is more potent when raw, helps relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. One study from Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine found that aged garlic extract was just as effective in reducing blood pressure as Atenolol, a commonly prescribed medication.

4/7

Reduces cholesterol levels

Raw garlic can also positively impact cholesterol levels. It is known to lower total and LDL cholesterol (often referred to as "bad" cholesterol) while potentially increasing HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol). A meta-analysis of 39 clinical trials published in The Journal of Nutrition found that garlic supplementation resulted in a significant reduction in total and LDL cholesterol levels. This makes garlic a valuable addition to the diet for maintaining heart health.

It has antibiotic properties

Garlic's antibacterial and antiviral properties have been well-documented. The sulfur compounds in garlic, such as allicin, provide a natural defence against various pathogens. This can help prevent infections and may even reduce the severity of illnesses. Garlic’s antimicrobial properties are so effective that they can even fight off foodborne pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli.

6/7

Helps in detoxification

Garlic’s sulfur compounds help the body eliminate toxins and heavy metals. Garlic can significantly reduce lead levels in the blood and alleviate symptoms of toxicity, such as headaches and high blood pressure. The detoxifying effect of garlic is attributed to its ability to increase the production of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that supports the liver in detoxification processes.

Practical tips for consuming raw garlic

While the health benefits of raw garlic are impressive, it’s essential to consume it properly to maximize its effects. Here are some tips:

Chop or crush the garlic and let it sit for about 10 minutes before eating. This waiting period allows the allicin to form, which is the compound responsible for many of garlic’s health benefits.

Eating garlic raw can be challenging due to its strong flavour. You can mix it into a spoonful of honey, add it to a salad, or combine it with other foods to make it more palatable.

Start with a small amount, such as half a clove, and gradually increase to a full clove per day. This helps your body adjust and reduces the risk of gastrointestinal discomfort.
