What is brain rot?

Considering the fast-paced digital world we live in, brain rot has become quite a common problem for many. While we might joke about it, deep down we all feel it...It is that dull, restless feeling that we are not as focussed or sharp as we used to be. That our attention spans and memories have reduced and we are easily distracted. This is mostly due to all the endless scrolling on our phones watching social media posts and videos for 'entertainment'. If you feel so too, then here we list some effective ways to unrot and destress your brain:

2/6

Have a digital detox

One of the main reasons for brain rot is doomscrolling. So, one of the foremost things to unrot your brain is to have a digital detox. In order to reclaim your life and time from your phone, you need to:
- Avoid using your phone after 9pm and before 8am. This will help you destress before sleep, and have a mindful and intentional morning-- setting the tone of your mornings right.
- Turn your phone's screen to 70% grayscale mode. This will help reduce eye strain at night time.
- Keep a screentime widget on the front page. This will make you realise how much time you waste scrolling online.
- Turn off unimportant notifications. This will help you stay more focussed on important tasks.

3/6

Embrace boredom

These days, distractions have become our default setting. But, if you truly want to “get your brain back,” you need to relearn the art of stillness— being in the present moment. You need to relearn to be comfortable in your own company without constantly filling every free moment with something to do.

It’s not about grand changes; small, simple habits can make a huge difference, like:
- Taking a 20-minute walk without your phone
- Eating a meal without watching a screen
-Waiting in line or for someone without pulling out your phone—just observe your surroundings, notice people, or even carry a book to read in spare moments.

These little pauses let your mind breathe, sharpen focus, and bring you back to the present. Over time, you’ll find that quiet moments feel less empty and more enriching.

4/6

Write, write, write

With phones becoming too accessible, most of us have the habit of recording, clicking, or simply taking voice notes. Instead, ditch using your phone and start jotting down important things with pen and paper-- the old school style. A study titled 'Learning to Improve: Using Writing to Increase Critical Thinking Performance in General Education Biology' by Ian J. Quitadamo and Martha J. Kurtz, which is published and available through PubMed Central, investigates how writing improves critical thinking skills, including analysis and inference, significantly in students.

So try:
- starting a simple journaling habit
- write handwritten letters
- and stop outsourcing your writing to Artificial Intelligence.

5/6

Develop the habit of researching for fun

Reading for research or fun is a great way to not only learn something new and expand your world view, but also utilise your brain and improve your grasping power. So, pick a topic of your interest, read about it, watch videos on it, follow experts. Make learning about new things a fun habit.

6/6

Read, read, read...

...Be it books, magazines, newspaper, or even blogs or websites that you like. Reading offers countless benefits for the mind and soul. It enhances vocabulary, improves focus, and strengthens comprehension skills. Regular reading stimulates the brain, keeping it sharp and engaged, which can help prevent cognitive decline. It also reduces stress by allowing you to escape into different worlds, stories, and perspectives. Reading expands knowledge, fuels creativity, and helps develop empathy by exposing you to diverse characters and experiences. Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, or poetry, the habit encourages lifelong learning and self-improvement. Plus, it’s an affordable and accessible way to relax while nourishing your mind and broadening your worldview.
