Kidneys are background organs that carry out some of the most important functions of the body. They filter waste from the blood, assist in regulating the amount of fluid in the body, regulate the blood pressure as well, and assist in the production of red blood cells. The majority of individuals unknowingly overwork their kidneys. These small but serious mistakes will ultimately result in permanent kidney damage. The following are six habits of daily living that can harm kidney function if caught early. Most physicians advise their patients against these habits just to prevent kidney damage.

Excessive intake of sugar

Excessive consumption of sugar does more than just elevate blood glucose. It tends to overwork the kidneys, especially for insulin-resistant or undiagnosed prediabetic individuals. The kidneys strain to filter excess glucose from the blood. When blood sugar is consistently high, it gets harder for them to do so. It can, however, over time harm the blood vessels within the kidneys and result in reduced function. Reducing consumption of sweetened drinks, processed meals, and refined carbs can alleviate the kidneys' workload, allowing them to function at their best.Prioritizing a balanced diet and regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is essential to protect kidney health and prevent long-term complications.

Not drinking enough water

​Water helps the kidneys filter out toxins and waste. If the body is deprived of water, the kidneys become less effective with no fluid to process, which takes away from this vital filtering function. Dehydration also increases the risk of kidney stone or urinary tract infection, impacting kidney function. Being well-hydrated all day keeps the kidneys functioning well. Drinking enough water daily is one of the simplest ways to support long-term kidney health.

Consuming too much salt

Excessive intake of sodium is a usual cause of high blood pressure, which immediately strains the kidneys. The kidneys regulate the amount of salt in the body, but too much salt presses them heavily and damages the small blood vessels in the long term. Packaged foods, takeaway foods, eating at restaurants, and canned products tend to be high in concealed sodium. Reducing salt by preparing fresh food at home and reading the labels can actually bring a great reduction. Long-term control of sodium intake also supports heart health, reduces water retention, and helps maintain healthy blood pressure levels naturally

Ignoring high blood pressure

High blood pressure is one of the principal causes of kidney disease. Constant stress on blood vessels can damage the filtering system in the kidneys. Unfortunately, many high blood pressure patients are completely symptomless, so monitoring things is even more relevant. Keeping blood pressure in check by living in a specific way, reducing stress, having regular physical exercise, and taking medicine when necessary can avoid the decline of kidney function in the long run.

Not sleeping enough


The kidneys also possess a natural sleep-wake cycle. When sleep is disrupted or constantly shortened, those hormones involved in regulating kidney function get upset. Missing sleep is also linked with heightened inflammation, insulin resistance, and increased blood pressure, which severely impact the kidneys' health. Getting 7 to 9 hours of quality (that's important too) sleep every night assists the body's natural repair processes, including those for the kidneys.
