5 expert tips for improving blood circulation and boosting vascular health

Good blood circulation is a key foundation of overall health, yet it often goes unnoticed until problems arise. Proper blood flow maintains adequate flow of oxygen and nutrients to all of the body's cells and organs, and ensures that the by-products of waste are eliminated properly. Poor circulation, on the other hand, can cause fatigue, swelling, varicose veins, and other ailments.
According to Dr. Sumit Kapadia, a vascular surgeon with 18 years of experience, here are 5 tips that one should follow for good blood flow in the body.

2/8

Get moving (Do not be lazy)

With sitting long hours and a desk job at the office, which everyone is doing nowadays, immobility is a stealth health danger. Dr. Kapadia emphasizes the fact that extended sitting is just like smoking in the modern age, causing a full range of circulation-related ailments. As you sit for so long, blood accumulates in the legs, causing swelling and diminished flow towards the heart. The cure is easy: develop the habit of standing, stretching, or just walking around every 30 to 40 minutes. Even small breaks can engage the muscles, circulate the blood, and reduce stiffness. Over the long term, this single modification can make a big difference in cutting down considerably on the risks of a sedentary lifestyle.

3/8

Stay hydrated

Water might seem basic but it is arguably the most vital constituent of good circulation. Blood consists of a high water content, and dryness will make it thicker and harder for the heart to pump around. Dr. Kapadia recommends monitoring your state of hydration closely throughout the day. Try to stay well-hydrated so your urine is light yellow, a sign of healthy hydration. Having water in reach and drinking from it throughout the day is a easy habit that keeps blood flowing well and benefits all your organs. . Including herbal teas or water-rich fruits can further support hydration and enhance overall cardiovascular and kidney health.

4/8

Incorporate foods that boost circulation

Our diet plays a significant role in vascular well-being. The foods that are full of antioxidants, beneficial fats, and essential nutrients are likely to increase blood flow and make blood vessels stronger. Dr. Kapadia specifically mentions leafy greens, citrus fruits, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish. These foods reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol plaques, and enhance the flexibility of blood vessels. Reducing process foods, refined carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats is also as important.

5/8

Practice simple leg exercises

The legs have a much larger role to play in circulation than most realize. The muscles in the calves are also known as the "peripheral heart" because they act to force blood back from the lower extremities up to the heart. Light exercises of the legs as suggested by Dr. Kapadia must be included in the routine, e.g., calf raises, ankle circles, or a walk. The exercise enhances the calf muscle, decreases venous pooling of blood in the lower limbs, and prevents such conditions as varicose veins. The individuals working or standing for extended periods particularly find them to be of great benefit as they give instant relief and long-term protection to vascular well-being.

6/8

Lift your legs as much as possible

In the case of people standing for extended periods of time, lifting legs from time to time can be a huge savior. Staying on one's feet all day tends to overexert the veins and lead to swelling in the ankles and feet. Dr. Kapadia suggests taking a break with your feet elevated above the level of your heart. This easy exercise lets gravity help push blood back towards the heart and give veins a rest, easing discomfort. 15 to 20 minutes of elevating legs can improve circulation in the body. Simple stretches or short walks between long standing periods can further boost circulation and prevent stiffness.

Signs your blood circulation might be sluggish

Sluggish blood flow can cause fatigue, dizziness, cold hands and feet, numbness or tingling, and swelling in extremities. Skin may appear pale or bluish, and wounds heal slowly. It can also lead to chest pain, shortness of breath, brain fog, headaches, or digestive issues. Poor circulation often results from a sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, smoking, or heart problems. Improving circulation through regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and proper hydration can help restore energy and support overall cardiovascular health.
