What is Miyazaki Mango?

According to reports, it is the world's most expensive mango variety and is sold as 'Taiyo-no-Tomago' or 'Eggs of Sunshine'. While the skin of all other varieties is either green or yellow in colour, this one comes in flaming red and in terms of shape, it looks like a giant dinosaur egg. (Image: istock)

​What is so unique about this mango?

According to reports, the Miyazaki mango must weigh at least 350g and have a sugar content of 15% or more. As per experts, the cultivation of this variety requires long hours of bright sunshine, warm abundant rainfall. It is said to be a premium fruit and one of the most expensive ones sold in Japan and the starting price of this variety is Rs. 8,600/- and goes up to Rs. 2.7 lakhs for a box of two mangoes. ​Where to shop Miyazaki mango?

This variety is grown in Japan, Thailand, Philippines and India. According to a recent report, an orchardist couple in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh claimed that they have grown this variety of mango and they had to employ four guards and seven dogs to protect the rare mangoes from being stolen. ​Other expensive varieties

Other expensive varieties of mangoes that are available around the world include Kohitur, which is one of the costliest mangoes of India, grown in Murshidabad, West Bengal and sells for up to Rs 1500/piece. If reports are to be believed, this variety was first grown in 18th century, and royalties used to cut it with ivory or bamboo knives and spear it with golden toothpicks. Another variety that is known in world market is Top End Mango, which is produced in South East Asia and it holds the Guinness World Record for most expensive mangoes ever sold at an auction. A tray of 16 mangoes was sold for Rs 15 lakhs at the Brisbane Produce Markets Charity Auction. Most recently, a variety that made headlines is Noor Jahan, which is grown in Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh and is priced between Rs 500-Rs 1000/piece. (Image: istock)
